For the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 (CM5), changing to a higher-capacity RAM chip is not a practical upgrade: Raspberry Pi engineers say the module’s memory capacity is locked to its original size. That does not mean every RAM-chip repair is impossible. A skilled technician may be able to replace a failed chip with an identical part, although even a same-size repair can carry compatibility and stability risks.

Can you upgrade the RAM on a Raspberry Pi?

The evidence here concerns the Compute Module 5, not every Raspberry Pi model. In a June 2026 Raspberry Pi forum discussion, a technician described trying to change a 2GB CM5 to 4GB. The system continued to report 2GB, including after attempts involving a 4GB chip from a working 4GB CM5.

The forum post is a single reported case, not an independently replicated test. But Raspberry Pi engineers directly addressed the underlying question: the CM5’s memory capacity is locked to its original size. Phil Elwell, a Raspberry Pi Engineer and Forum Moderator, wrote: “I don’t see RAM being swapped between authorised devices of different sizes as a likely use case, but don’t waste your time trying – it won’t work.” Read the Raspberry Pi forum discussion.

Why changing the chip did not change the reported capacity

The technician reported first soldering in a 4GB chip, then trying one removed from a known-good 4GB CM5. They also changed a resistor associated with memory-size signaling, reflashed the board, and swapped SPI flash chips. The CM5 still exposed 2GB. Those are the poster’s reported steps and outcome; the discussion does not establish that each step was independently tested or that the same result applies to other Raspberry Pi generations.

Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 Kit
  • COMPLETE KIT: Development kit includes Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5, IO Board, protective case, cooling system, antenna kit, power supply, and essential HDMI/USB cables
  • POWERFUL PROCESSOR: Features BCM2712 64-bit processor with ARM Cortex-A76 architecture for high-performance computing capabilities
  • DEVELOPMENT READY: IO Board provides comprehensive connectivity options including HDMI and USB ports for versatile prototyping and embedded solutions
  • THERMAL MANAGEMENT: Includes dedicated cooler and heatsink system to maintain optimal operating temperatures during development
  • CONNECTIVITY: Comes with antenna kit and multiple USB/HDMI cables for immediate setup and testing of wireless applications

Raspberry Pi’s explanation is that capacity is locked to the original configuration. The forum discussion does not provide a supported procedure for bypassing that lock, and the reported attempts did not produce a higher reported capacity.

Can a RAM chip be replaced for repair?

A repair that restores the original capacity is different from an attempt to increase it. Raspberry Pi engineer timg236 said: “Swapping an identical (same part-code) chip for repair would work if you are sufficiently skilled.” This is a qualified possibility, not a guarantee that every failed CM5 RAM chip can be replaced successfully.

The same reply explains why matching capacity alone may not be enough: programmed density, organization, and tuning or timing attributes are involved. Those attributes let Raspberry Pi work with a wider range of SDRAM suppliers, but they can complicate a replacement even when it is intended to be like-for-like. Phil Elwell also cautioned that changing RAM can lead to random crashes, particularly under heavy load.

  • Capacity upgrade: Replacing the installed RAM with a larger-capacity chip is not a supported path to more memory on the CM5; the engineers say capacity is locked.
  • Like-for-like repair: A highly skilled technician may be able to fit the identical part code, but compatibility and stability are not assured.

Why Raspberry Pi locks the CM5’s memory capacity

Elwell said Raspberry Pi buys RAM in large quantities on competitive terms, while cheaper third-party parts may be available only in small volumes and may not have been tested by Raspberry Pi. In his account, conversions using those parts could bring reliability problems and additional support costs. He said the lock is intended to remove the commercial incentive to convert lower-capacity modules and resell them as higher-capacity versions.

What to do if you need more CM5 memory

Choose a CM5 with the required memory capacity when buying it. The forum discussion supports purchasing a factory-configured module; it does not validate aftermarket RAM-upgrade kits or establish a price comparison between configurations.

If your CM5 has a suspected RAM fault, treat chip replacement as specialist board-level repair rather than a routine upgrade. Ask a repairer whether they can match the exact part code and whether they can test stability under load. The forum discussion does not endorse a repair provider or establish that a repair service can bypass the capacity lock.
