You can make a Netflix-like place to browse and stream your own media with Plex Media Server, using a computer you already own as the host. The software setup can start at $0, but that does not mean every setup is free: you need a suitable always-on device and enough storage, and some remote-viewing or offline features may require paid Plex plans.
What a personal Plex library does—and does not do
Plex Media Server runs on a computer or other supported host and organizes media files you add to it. You use a Plex app or the web player to browse and watch that library on your devices. It is a way to stream your own collection, not a replacement catalog containing the shows and films offered by subscription services.
That distinction matters for both cost and rights: Plex does not provide the media files in this setup. You need media you are entitled to store and play, plus hardware and storage. The $0 starting point applies when you already have those resources, not to every possible build.
Choose a host that fits your collection and routine
An existing desktop or laptop is the simplest way to try Plex without buying a server. The PCMag setup guide published September 25, 2026, lists PCs, MacBooks, mini PCs, Linux devices, Nvidia Shield, and some routers as possible hosts, provided they meet Plex’s requirements. For the PC setup it describes, it lists at least an Intel Core i3, 4GB of RAM, Windows 10 or newer, or macOS 10.13 High Sierra or newer. Those are the guide’s stated requirements, not a guarantee that every workload will perform well; check Plex’s current documentation before choosing hardware.

For a large collection, the guide recommends several terabytes of storage and identifies 2TB as a possible minimum for a lot of 4K HDR content. Treat that as a rough starting point rather than a universal capacity rule: file sizes and the size of your library determine what you need.
Set up Plex Media Server
- Prepare a host. Choose a device that meets Plex’s current requirements and can remain powered on whenever you want to stream from it. If you are using a computer you already own, you can begin there instead of buying a dedicated server.
- Create a Plex account and install Plex Media Server. The September 25, 2026 PCMag guide lists installation options for Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD, and NAS devices. Follow the current installer and setup instructions for your host.
- Organize your files in folders. Create folders for categories such as Movies, TV Shows, Music, Photos, or Other Videos. Keep them in a media folder rather than placing them at the root of a drive, as the guide advises.
- Add libraries in Plex. In the server setup, choose the library type that matches each folder and point Plex to that folder. Separate libraries and appropriately named folders make the collection easier to browse.
- Open the library on a playback device. Use the Plex app on a device of your choice or visit plex.tv. The server software on the host needs to keep running for the library to be available.
Keep the library current and available
When you add files, put them in the matching media folder and scan the library so Plex can find them. The guide describes both manual scanning and automatic scanning when that option is enabled. If new content does not appear, first check that it is in a folder included in the correct library, then run a scan.

A computer-hosted server is not an on-demand cloud service: if the host is shut down or disconnected, other devices cannot retrieve the library from it. A PC also needs an internet connection to serve other users. Heavy 4K streaming may compete with online gaming for bandwidth on the same connection, so simultaneous use can affect the experience.
Share selected libraries with other people
Plex lets you grant selected contacts access to selected libraries. The guide recommends that recipients have Plex accounts and describes reviewing authorized devices and revoking access. Share only the libraries you intend those people to see, and review access when your needs change.

For users watching from outside your home, check the current Plex plan terms before assuming remote viewing is included at no cost. In its September 25, 2026 article, PCMag reported a Remote Watch Pass at $2.99 per month and Plex Pass at $6.99 per month, with Plex Pass tied there to offline downloads. These are dated prices and feature descriptions reported by that article, not independently verified current terms; confirm them with Plex before subscribing.

The PCMag author, Ajay Kumar, wrote: “Compared with alternatives like Jellyfin, I found Plex to be one of the easiest options to set up.” That is his personal assessment, not the result of a controlled comparison. If you are deciding between them, weigh the setup experience you prefer against the features and requirements each currently offers rather than treating one user’s experience as a universal verdict.
