To install AVG, download the installer for your operating system from AVG’s official support page, check that your device meets the current requirements, and follow the setup prompts. Windows uses a setup file; Mac installation starts by opening a downloaded DMG. Installing the app is separate from activating paid Internet Security features.
Before you install AVG
Check AVG’s current system requirements for the specific product and operating system you plan to use. Requirements can change, so don’t assume an older Windows or macOS version is supported based on a general statement.
For Windows AVG AntiVirus, AVG’s preparation guidance lists a supported processor, at least 1 GB of RAM, 2 GB of free disk space, and an internet connection. These figures are requirements for that product, not a guarantee that every Windows PC is compatible; confirm the current requirements for your edition and product.

Install AVG on a Windows PC
- Open AVG’s official AVG AntiVirus installation instructions and download the installer for Windows.
- Open the downloaded setup file.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete installation.
- Restart the PC if requested or if components are not functioning fully. AVG Support notes that some components may not fully function until the PC is restarted.
Install AVG on a Mac
- Check your Mac against the current requirements for the AVG product on AVG’s system requirements page.
- Download the Mac installer from AVG’s official installation instructions and save it somewhere easy to find, such as Downloads.
- Open the downloaded DMG, then launch the AVG installer.
- Follow the prompts to allow the installer, review and accept the privacy policy and licence terms, and install AVG. If prompted, authorize the installation or system certificate trust changes with Touch ID or your Mac login password.
- Complete the requested permissions setup. Restart the Mac if prompted; AVG says some components may not fully function until it restarts.
Installation, activation, and trials are different
Installing AVG does not automatically activate paid Internet Security features. If you have a subscription, use AVG’s Internet Security installation and activation instructions to complete activation.
AVG’s FAQ says its described Internet Security trial requires a payment method and converts to a paid subscription after the trial unless cancelled before it ends. Trial terms can change, so verify the terms shown by AVG before starting one.

Troubleshoot a failed installation
- Recheck the current requirements for your exact operating system and AVG product.
- Make sure the installer file downloaded correctly; if needed, download a fresh copy from AVG’s official installation page.
- Remove previous antivirus software, then restart and try again.
- On Mac, complete any requested permissions and authorize prompts with your Mac credentials.
- If installation still fails, follow AVG’s official troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming a single fix will apply.
