To remove write protection from a Samsung Portable SSD, first identify whether the drive is locked by Samsung security mode, mounted read-only because of its file system, or affected by an exFAT consistency issue. The remedy depends on the symptom: unlock a protected drive with its password, check an exFAT volume after cross-platform use, or confirm whether a Mac is trying to write to NTFS. Don’t format or reset the SSD as a first step; either can erase your data.
Start with what the drive shows
Open the SSD in your computer and check whether you see only a small partition or whether the drive’s full capacity appears. A small visible partition can be normal when Samsung security mode is enabled and the SSD has not been unlocked. On the T7, Samsung says the locked drive exposes about 128 MB; the full capacity becomes available after you unlock it. Samsung’s T7 User Manual describes this behavior.
If the full drive mounts and you can read files but cannot save changes, skip to the file-system checks below. A password lock and a read-only volume are different problems.
Unlock the SSD if only a small partition appears
- Connect the SSD and open Samsung Portable SSD software or Samsung Magician, if available for your model and operating system.
- Enter the password you set for the drive and choose the unlock option.
- Check whether the full drive capacity and your files are now accessible.
Samsung’s support guidance also recommends unlocking the drive when only restricted capacity appears: Samsung Portable SSD support. The T7 manual says its security mode requires an unlock each time the drive is connected.

If you forgot the password, do not try a factory reset if the data matters. Samsung says its password-reset service causes loss of all user data and there is no password-recovery option. Contact Samsung support before taking a destructive step. The T7 Shield manual also warns that Samsung is not liable for data loss caused by forgotten or stolen passwords: Samsung T7 Shield User Manual.
Check exFAT after using the SSD on different operating systems
Samsung documents a specific issue in which writing to an exFAT-formatted portable SSD may become locked after the drive has been used across operating systems. Samsung’s T7 manual states: “When using exFAT across multiple operating systems, data writing may become locked and you may only be able to read data.” Try the applicable check for the computer you are using: T7 User Manual; T7 Shield User Manual.

On a Mac
- Reconnect the SSD.
- Use Eject on the drive, then reconnect it and check whether writing works.
On Windows
- If Windows prompts you to scan the drive, choose “Scan and fix.”
- If there is no prompt, open File Explorer, right-click the SSD, and select Properties > Tools > Check to run Check Disk (CHKDSK).
- After the check completes, try writing a small test file.
Back up important files before attempting repairs. Don’t format the drive simply to see whether the write restriction disappears.
On a Mac, confirm whether the drive is NTFS
If you can read files but cannot write to the SSD on a Mac, check its format before changing security settings. macOS can read NTFS storage but does not natively write to it, according to Apple’s external storage-device guidance. That limitation is a file-system compatibility issue, not proof that Samsung security mode is enabled. Samsung says its Portable SSDs are formatted as exFAT for Windows and macOS compatibility: Samsung Portable SSD software and support.

Reformatting to change the file system erases the drive, so copy your data elsewhere first if you decide that is necessary.

- Check that the cable is connected securely and try another USB port.
- Consult the manual for your exact SSD model and operating system.
- If the drive remains unrecognized or read-only, contact Samsung support or an authorized service center. Samsung recommends this escalation when a correctly connected SSD is still not recognized: Samsung Portable SSD support.
The documented steps above do not establish a universal safe command for clearing a persistent device-level read-only state across every Samsung model and operating system. Avoid assuming that a disk utility command or a format will fix it, especially when the drive contains data you need.
