An access point name (APN) is the carrier data connection configuration your phone uses to connect to an IP data network. It is a set of settings—not a Wi-Fi network name or a physical access point. Your carrier determines which APN values and related settings apply to your service.
What does APN mean on a phone?
APN stands for Access Point Name. Android’s documentation describes an APN as configuration for connecting a cellular device to an IP data network. Your carrier uses the APN name, type, and other settings to determine how the connection is made, including details such as IP address assignment and security methods. Some configurations can also govern access to private networks. Android Developers’ APN reference
In practical terms, an APN is one part of the configuration behind your phone’s mobile-data connection. It does not create cellular coverage, and it is not the name of a Wi-Fi network.
Is an APN the same as a Wi-Fi access point?
No. Despite the shared phrase “access point,” these are different things:

- Cellular APN: Carrier-provided connection configuration used by a phone to reach a mobile data network.
- Wi-Fi access point: A networking device that lets wireless clients connect to a wireless local area network. NIST’s glossary and Cisco’s access point explanation describe this device meaning.
An APN is therefore a configuration, while a Wi-Fi access point is equipment. The APN setting does not identify the Wi-Fi network your phone joins.
What information can APN settings contain?
The fields shown depend on the carrier, device, and service. Carrier instructions may include an APN name and type, as well as fields for a username or password, authentication, proxy, or multimedia messaging service (MMS). Not every service uses every field, and the labels and available options can vary.

These values tell the phone how to establish the carrier connection; they are not universal settings that can safely be copied from another carrier or device. T-Mobile’s APN guidance cautions that an incorrect entry can interrupt mobile data or other service.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo you need to change your APN settings?
Usually, do not change them unless your carrier or service provider says to. If your phone’s data connection is not working, an APN change is only appropriate when the carrier’s instructions or support team identifies it as necessary. Motorola Support UK likewise says to obtain the APN and detailed settings from the provider if a change or new entry is needed: Motorola’s APN instructions.

APN screens and the ability to edit them vary by phone software and carrier policy. T-Mobile documents Android and iPhone menu locations, but iPhone access depends on carrier support.
