“Samsung Memo file” can mean a note from an older Memo app, an S Note document, a current Samsung Notes file, or data inside a phone-transfer backup. Those are not interchangeable formats. If you can still access the notes on a Samsung device, start with Samsung Notes’ import feature, then export a copy in a format you can keep outside the app.
What does “Samsung Memo file” mean?
Samsung has had several note apps and data types. Samsung’s Galaxy Store listing says Samsung Notes can import notes and memos from earlier Memo or S Note versions, and that new notes use the .sdocx extension. Samsung separately documents importing older S Note files with the .spd extension. These facts do not mean every legacy file or transfer backup opens through the same process.
Before trying to open or convert a file, identify its source app, the Samsung phone or tablet model, its Android or One UI version, and the full file extension. If the file came from Smart Switch or another backup process, note that too: a backup package is not necessarily a standalone note file. Samsung’s instructions and supported import options can vary by app release and device.
One secondary source, FileInfo, describes a particular .memo format as a ZIP-compressed archive containing XML and a Media folder, and says Samsung Notes can open it. FileInfo’s entry was updated on March 26, 2021; it is not a Samsung technical specification and does not establish that other files called “Samsung Memo”—including .nmm, .snb, .spd, or .sdocx files—have the same structure. How do I open an old Samsung Memo file?
If the note is available on a Samsung phone or in an account or storage location that Samsung Notes can access, try the app’s import workflow first. Samsung’s current US support guide gives this route:
- Open Samsung Notes.
- Open Menu, then Settings.
- Choose Import notes.
- Select an available source, such as a Samsung account, and follow the prompts.
Samsung’s labels and available sources may differ by version. See Samsung’s guide to Samsung Notes features and settings and check the support information for your device if the menu is different.

For older S Note content, Samsung Korea documents importing .spd files into Samsung Notes. That is a specific legacy route, not a general instruction to rename files or treat every Memo backup as an S Note document. See Samsung Korea’s Samsung Notes instructions.

Which method fits the file and the goal?
| What you have or want | Route to try | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Older Memo or S Note content that Samsung Notes can access | Use Samsung Notes’ Import notes workflow. | Available sources and legacy-format support depend on the app version and device. |
An older S Note .spd file |
Follow Samsung’s documented legacy import instructions. | This does not establish support for other extensions or backup containers. |
| A note that already opens in Samsung Notes | Use More options and Save as file to export it. | The documented export formats do not guarantee identical preservation of every feature or layout. |
| A Smart Switch backup or other transfer package | Use the relevant Samsung backup or restore workflow for the device and memo type. | Restore eligibility can be model- and data-type-specific; it is not the same as importing a standalone file. |
| A file described only as “.memo” | Confirm which app created it, then try a supported Samsung Notes import if available. | FileInfo describes one variant only; the extension name alone is not enough to identify all Samsung note data. |
How do I export a note to PDF or text?
Once a note opens in Samsung Notes, Samsung documents exporting through the note’s More options menu and Save as file. Available formats include PDF, Word, PowerPoint, image, and text. Samsung Korea also lists Samsung Notes format and instructions for choosing a destination folder.

- Open the note in Samsung Notes.
- Tap More options, then Save as file.
- Choose a format suited to your purpose: PDF for a shareable page, text for readable words, or a native Samsung Notes format when available and useful for continued editing.
- Select a destination folder and save the exported copy.
For the current US workflow and available formats, consult Samsung’s feature and settings guide; Samsung Korea’s Samsung Notes instructions provide additional legacy and save-location details. The reviewed instructions do not establish that every export preserves handwriting layers, audio recordings, or page layout identically, so inspect an export before relying on it as a complete replacement for the original note.
Where are Samsung Notes files stored?
Samsung says Samsung Notes files are stored in internal storage, but that does not identify a universal folder path for every app generation or device. Android’s storage model restricts access according to where an app keeps its data and the permissions available to apps and users. As a result, a file manager may not expose app-managed note data as an ordinary document you can copy or open directly.

Samsung’s storage FAQ also discusses a case where an external SD card is read-only for Notes. That is a specific support condition, not evidence that all notes are on an SD card or that moving a database will make it accessible. See Samsung’s FAQ and support information and Android’s overview of data and file storage.

What about Screen off memos?
On supported devices, a Screen off memo is saved into Samsung Notes when you tap Save. Samsung’s Galaxy manual states: “When you tap Save after writing a memo, the memo will be saved to Samsung Notes.” This describes that feature on supported devices; it does not establish where every historical Memo file is stored. See Samsung’s Screen off memo instructions.

Can Samsung restore memos from an old phone or backup?
Sometimes, but restore support is conditional. Samsung’s support article for the Galaxy Note8 and S8 series distinguishes memo types and backup routes, including Samsung Cloud and Smart Switch, and identifies cases that are not supported. Some of its instructions are model-specific—for example, a Smart Switch restore condition may depend on whether the original app is absent. Do not treat that article as a promise that every memo from every older phone can be restored.
Use the instructions for the exact model, memo type, and backup method involved. Samsung’s Note8/S8 guidance is available at Samsung Korea’s memo backup and restore article. If the old device still works, importing or exporting from that device is preferable to experimenting on the only backup.
How to keep a usable second copy
Samsung documents Samsung Cloud synchronization for Samsung Notes and separately documents importing notes from sources such as Google Drive. Syncing notes and importing files are distinct workflows; neither should be assumed to convert every legacy backup automatically.
- Export important notes as files and confirm that the exported copies open.
- Keep a native Samsung Notes copy when that option is available, alongside a portable PDF or text copy if that suits your needs.
- Save exported files to a destination you can access later. A USB-C flash drive can be one option, but compatibility depends on the device, port, and drive; the cited Samsung and Android instructions do not validate a particular drive or filesystem.
What to avoid when a file seems hidden
A hidden or inaccessible note is not necessarily deleted, and a file that cannot be opened is not necessarily recoverable through a generic file-recovery method. The available Samsung and Android documentation does not provide one path to every legacy memo database or endorse a universal recovery utility.
- Do not rename an unknown backup to
.zipor another extension on the assumption that it will reveal the notes. - Do not root the device or modify app databases merely to search for a hidden note; the documented import and export routes are safer starting points.
- Do not assume that an app-private database can be copied or opened like a normal document.
If Samsung Notes cannot import the data, identify the original app and backup method, then consult support instructions for the exact device and data type. The extension alone is not enough to choose a reliable conversion or restore procedure.
