For a low-spec PC, Ubuntu Desktop’s default edition is no longer the obvious lightweight pick. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS guidance calls for 6 GB of RAM for a comfortable experience, while Linux Mint 22.3 publishes a 2 GB minimum and offers an Xfce edition it describes as lighter than Cinnamon. But that does not mean Mint uniquely filled a gap Ubuntu abandoned: Canonical still points users with less capable computers to lightweight Ubuntu flavors such as Xubuntu and Lubuntu.

What changed—and what the headline gets wrong

“Ubuntu” can mean the default Ubuntu Desktop or one of several Ubuntu flavors with different desktop environments. The current requirement comparison here is specifically between Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS and Linux Mint 22.3, particularly Mint’s Xfce edition—not every Ubuntu variant and every Mint desktop.

Canonical’s guidance for Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS is higher than the published requirements for Mint 22.3. That makes the default Ubuntu desktop less compelling for some older or memory-constrained computers. Yet Canonical recommends Xubuntu or Lubuntu for lower-spec machines, so lightweight Ubuntu options remain available. Mint Xfce is another choice, not proof that Mint alone took over a role Ubuntu left empty.

How the published requirements compare

System and edition Published memory guidance Published storage guidance Support horizon
Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS, default desktop 6 GB RAM for a comfortable experience; Canonical says installation may be possible below its listed specifications. 25 GB free for a comfortable experience. Until April 2031.
Linux Mint 22.3, editions including Xfce 2 GB minimum; 4 GB recommended for comfortable usage. 20 GB minimum; 100 GB recommended. Until April 2029; based on Ubuntu Noble.
Linux Mint 21.x Not stated in the cited release table. Not stated in the cited release table. Until April 2027; based on Ubuntu Jammy.

These are vendor-published figures, not results from a controlled test on identical computers. Canonical’s numbers describe comfortable-use guidance, not a hard installation barrier. They also apply to Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS, not automatically to Xubuntu or Lubuntu. Mint’s download page says Xfce uses fewer resources than Cinnamon, but it does not establish a quantified speed or memory advantage over Ubuntu Desktop.

  • Linux Mint (Cinnamon) 64-Bit - Keyboard with Full NumberPad - Fast Charging

For historical perspective, Canonical’s Ubuntu Desktop 11.10 documentation listed a minimum of 384 MB of memory. That older minimum and today’s comfortable-use recommendation measure different things, so they should not be treated as a like-for-like performance comparison.

Which version makes sense for an older PC?

Choose Mint Xfce if lower resource use is the priority

Mint’s own description positions Xfce as lighter on resource use than its Cinnamon edition. If you want Mint and are trying to keep desktop demands modest, Xfce is the edition to test first. Its published requirements for Mint 22.3 are 2 GB minimum and 4 GB recommended, but those figures alone cannot predict how smoothly your particular applications will run.

Choose Xubuntu or Lubuntu if you want to stay with Ubuntu

Canonical explicitly names Xubuntu and Lubuntu as options for lower-spec computers and says 2 GB of RAM or more for those examples. These are distinct Ubuntu flavors, not the default Ubuntu Desktop edition covered by the 6 GB comfortable-use recommendation. Check the release notes for the specific flavor you plan to install rather than assuming the default desktop’s requirements apply.

Choose default Ubuntu Desktop if its experience and support window fit

If your computer meets Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS’s comfortable-use guidance and you prefer its default desktop, its support horizon extends to April 2031—two years beyond Mint 22.3’s listed end date. A newer release’s support window does not by itself make it the better choice; hardware compatibility and the desktop you want matter too.

Why the same Linux desktop can feel different on two PCs

RAM and storage figures help narrow the options, but they are not a complete performance forecast. Browser tabs, applications, graphics hardware, storage type, drivers, and available memory can all affect the experience. There is no controlled, same-hardware benchmark in the cited official sources that establishes Mint Xfce, Ubuntu Desktop, Xubuntu, or Lubuntu as universally faster.

Boot and device support can be as important as desktop weight. Mint provides optional HWE ISO images with newer kernels to improve compatibility with newer hardware. Mint also warns that proprietary drivers and third-party kernel modules may have limited support with those kernels.

Try the system before replacing your current one

  1. Get the ISO for the exact edition you want to evaluate. Compare Mint Xfce with Xubuntu or Lubuntu if low resource use is the main concern.
  2. Create a bootable USB installer and start the computer from it. Ubuntu’s installation tutorial documents this process and explains that Ubuntu can be tried from USB without installation.
  3. Use the live session to check your own hardware. Test Wi-Fi, graphics, sound, sleep and resume, and the applications you rely on. This hands-on check can reveal compatibility problems, but it does not guarantee installed performance.
  4. If Mint’s regular image will not boot on newer hardware, try its HWE ISO. Consider Mint’s warning about potential proprietary-driver and third-party-module support limits before relying on that kernel option.

Bottom line: compare editions, not distro reputations

Ubuntu Desktop’s current comfortable-use guidance is more demanding than Mint 22.3’s published minimums, and Mint Xfce is explicitly positioned as lighter than Mint Cinnamon. That is a good reason to consider Mint Xfce for an older PC—but not to conclude that Ubuntu no longer has lightweight choices. Test the exact editions on your machine, and include Xubuntu or Lubuntu if you want an Ubuntu-based alternative.
