A factory reset erases downloaded content, including in-app purchases, restores factory settings, and deregisters the tablet from its Amazon account. If you’re sure you want to proceed, use Settings > Device Options > Reset to Factory Defaults while the tablet is working. If it’s frozen or Settings won’t open, reset it in Recovery Mode instead.
Before you reset: know what will be erased
Amazon says a factory reset removes all downloaded content, including in-app purchases, and returns the device to its original factory settings. It also deregisters the tablet from the Amazon account, so you’ll need to register it again before using it. A reset is not the same as restarting the tablet.
“Amazon Kids tablet” commonly refers to a Fire tablet sold as a Fire Kids or Fire Kids Pro edition. Amazon lists these editions across multiple Fire tablet model families and generations in its Fire Tablet Quick Start Guides.
Reset a Fire Kids tablet from Settings
Use this method if the tablet turns on and you can open Settings. Amazon’s menu route is:

- Swipe down twice from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Device Options.
- Tap Reset to Factory Defaults and confirm the reset when prompted.

Reset it if you can’t open Settings
If the tablet is frozen or you cannot reach Settings, Amazon provides a Recovery Mode reset:

- Turn the tablet off.
- Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons together to enter Recovery Mode.
- Use the volume buttons to navigate to Wipe data/factory reset.
- Press the Power button to select it, then confirm the reset.
Recovery Mode also erases downloaded content and deregisters the tablet. Follow Amazon’s Factory Reset Your Fire Tablet from Recovery Mode guide if the menu labels or button behavior differ on your model.

Forgot the password on the adult profile
Amazon’s guidance says a factory reset is required to restore full access when you forget the parental-controls password set on an adult profile. This is a device reset, so use the Settings or Recovery Mode steps above according to whether you can open Settings. See Set Up Parental Controls on Your Fire Tablet.

Forgot the Parent Dashboard PIN
The Parent Dashboard parental-controls PIN is a separate issue from a forgotten on-device adult-profile password. Amazon’s dashboard guidance says to deregister and then reregister the device through Manage Your Content and Devices. Follow the Parent Dashboard FAQ rather than using Recovery Mode just to address this PIN.
Child-profile settings
Settings for a child profile are a separate control area from adult-profile parental controls. Amazon explains these controls in What are Child Profile Settings on Fire Tablet?; many can be managed remotely, so a factory reset may not be necessary for a child-profile setting change.

After the reset
Register the tablet to your Amazon account again before using it. Then configure the child profile and its settings as needed.
