Open the app and tap Today. What you tap next depends on which version you see: in the older Fitbit app, tap the Steps tile; in the redesigned Google Health app, check the customizable focus metrics on Today and add or select steps if needed. The interface is changing, so the same button sequence may not appear for every account.
Find steps in the app you have
Google says the Fitbit app transition to Google Health begins May 19, 2026. The redesigned app for connected Fitbit-device and Pixel Watch users has Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health tabs. See Google’s announcement about the Google Health app and its feature map.

If steps is not among the metrics, use the available customization controls to configure the Today display. Google describes Today metrics as customizable, but does not specify one universal label or button sequence for every account.
Check your steps without opening the phone app
A compatible Fitbit device may show step statistics on its screen, as well as in the companion app. The exact display and navigation vary by device, so use the instructions for your model rather than assuming a particular menu. Google describes viewing stats on-device and in the companion app in its Inspire getting-started guidance.

If you cannot find the steps metric

Identify whether you are looking at the older Fitbit interface or the redesigned Google Health app; the Today screen differs between them.

In Google Health, check whether Today’s focus metrics have been customized and use the available controls to include steps.

If the Steps tile is absent in the older interface or the steps metric cannot be located in the redesigned app, Google’s cited guidance does not establish a complete troubleshooting sequence for that situation. Avoid deleting step data as a display fix: the older help page describes deletion as data management, not as a way to restore a missing metric.
