Usually, it does not matter which port you use on a basic unmanaged network switch: an ordinary open port can connect a computer, router, or other Ethernet device. Port choice does matter if the switch is managed, ports have different capabilities, or the device needs Power over Ethernet (PoE). Check the labels and manual for your exact model.
When any port on a switch will work
On a typical unmanaged switch, any ordinary available Ethernet port is usually suitable for a regular wired device. Some models with Auto MDI/MDI-X also let you connect a router or another switch to an ordinary port without needing a dedicated uplink port. TP-Link documents this behavior for specific unmanaged Gigabit switch models; it is not a guarantee for every switch. See TP-Link’s installation guidance.
If the switch marks a port as an uplink, combo, or otherwise special, follow the model’s instructions rather than assuming it is interchangeable with the others.

Managed switches: VLANs and port roles
A managed switch can assign different settings to individual ports. A port may be configured as an access port for a particular VLAN or as a trunk port that carries traffic for multiple VLANs. A device connected to a port with an unsuitable role or VLAN may not reach the network it needs. Cisco explains these per-port behaviors in its Catalyst 2960-X configuration guide. Its statement about access ports applies to that platform’s documented behavior.

PoE, speed, and other port capabilities
Ports on the same switch may not offer the same features. For a PoE camera, access point, or phone, use a port that supports the required PoE standard, and check the switch’s total power budget and any port-priority settings. A port’s PoE label alone does not establish that the switch can supply enough power for every connected device.
For example, TP-Link lists PoE on four of the five ports of its TL-SG1005P. That is a specification for this model, not a general rule about switches. Check the TL-SG1005P specifications. Also verify whether ports differ in speed or are marked as combo or uplink ports.

Port numbers and physical layout
Port numbering and layout depend on the model. Read the numbers and feature labels printed on the switch, and consult its manual if the numbering is unclear. For example, Cisco’s Catalyst Micro Switch guide describes port numbering for that product family; it should not be treated as a universal layout.

Choose a port for the device you are connecting
| Connection | What to check |
|---|---|
| Computer, printer, or other standard Ethernet device on an unmanaged switch | Try any ordinary open port. Check the model manual if the link does not come up. |
| Router or second switch | An ordinary port works on documented Auto MDI/MDI-X models. Follow the manual if the switch has a designated uplink, combo, or special port. |
| Device on a managed switch | Confirm the port is enabled and configured with the correct VLAN membership and access or trunk role. |
| PoE camera, access point, or phone | Confirm the port supports the device’s required PoE standard, and check the switch’s power budget and port-priority settings. |
What to check if a device does not connect
- Check the physical connection. Make sure the cable is seated at both ends, try a known-working cable if available, and look at the port’s link or activity indicator.
- Check the port label and status. Make sure you have not used a special port incorrectly and, on a managed switch, verify that the port is enabled.
- Check the network configuration. On a managed switch, confirm the port’s VLAN and access or trunk role match the device and the network it should reach.
- Check the hardware match. Verify that the port and connected device support a compatible speed and, for PoE devices, the required PoE standard and power.
- Consult the exact model’s manual. Port functions, numbering, and special features vary by switch.
