For AWS-focused bucket and object work, start with the AWS CLI; for wildcard-heavy bulk transfers, consider s5cmd; and for a bucket you want to access through a mounted folder, look at a filesystem client such as Mountpoint for Amazon S3. These tools are not interchangeable: some issue object-storage commands, while others present a bucket as a local filesystem.
Below are nine free and open-source candidates grouped by how you work. The right choice depends on your provider, transfer workflow, filesystem needs, and license requirements—not on a universal ranking. The tool may be free while the storage service is not: Amazon S3 charges for storage and transfers, and Free Tier eligibility and terms apply. Check AWS’s current S3 pricing before estimating costs.
Which S3 CLI should you use?
Choose a direct object-management CLI if you want commands to list, upload, download, copy, or delete bucket objects. Choose a mount-oriented utility if you need applications or file-oriented workflows to access a bucket through a local directory. A mounted bucket is not automatically equivalent to a local disk; check each project’s documented filesystem behavior before relying on it for a workload.

- Filesystem-style access: Mountpoint, s3fs-fuse, or goofys.
Direct object-management tools
1. AWS CLI: best fit for AWS S3 workflows
The AWS CLI has two distinct command groups for S3. The higher-level aws s3 commands simplify common bucket and object operations; aws s3api exposes individual S3 API operations. That separation makes the AWS CLI a practical default when your scripts and administration target Amazon S3 and you need either convenience commands or more direct API coverage. AWS documents a workflow for creating a bucket, uploading and listing objects, downloading, and deleting them.

2. s3cmd: a Python CLI for S3 object tasks and scripts
s3cmd is a long-running command-line tool for Amazon S3 and other S3-protocol storage. Its documented features include upload and download, synchronization, backup, multipart transfer, encryption, ACLs, and metadata handling. The project identifies its license as GPLv2 and says it is free for commercial and private use. Check whether that license fits your project, and verify support for your particular provider or endpoint rather than assuming every S3-compatible service behaves identically.
3. s5cmd: wildcard-oriented bulk operations
s5cmd is aimed at bulk work, with documented wildcard matching and parallel transfers. Its features include uploads, downloads, sync, batch deletion, piping data from standard input, credential options, and integrity checks. Those capabilities make it worth considering for scripted operations across many objects; they do not establish that it will be faster for every workload, and no benchmark comparison is implied here.

Confirm that restriction against the specific release you plan to use, since project behavior and documentation can change.
4. rclone: one command-line program for many storage backends
rclone supports an Amazon S3 backend alongside many other configured storage remotes. Its documented operations include copy, sync, check, and mount. The S3 documentation covers multipart uploads, credential sources, and the tradeoff between transfer concurrency and memory use, useful considerations when tuning a large transfer.
Take particular care with sync: it makes the destination match the source and can change or remove destination data. While learning the command, follow the project’s advice to use it interactively and understand the direction and effects of a sync before running it unattended.
5. MinIO Client (mc): commands for filesystems and S3-compatible stores
MinIO Client provides a Unix-like command set for filesystems and S3-compatible object stores. Its listed operations include ls, cp, mirror, diff, find, pipe, and rm; it can also configure aliases for S3-compatible endpoints. Check endpoint compatibility for your storage provider. The repository states that the client is governed by AGPLv3, so assess license compatibility for your intended use.

6. Cyberduck CLI (duck): command-line access in the Cyberduck ecosystem
Cyberduck’s documentation covers CLI commands for listing buckets and listing bucket contents, along with upload configuration examples. It may suit someone who also uses the broader Cyberduck client ecosystem. Its documented CLI coverage should guide expectations: do not assume it offers every operation or scripting behavior of the other tools here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you mount an S3 bucket as a local drive?
Yes. Mount-oriented clients expose a bucket through a local filesystem path, but that interaction model differs from issuing object commands. Filesystem semantics and supported operations matter: applications that expect local-disk behavior may not work as expected against object storage.
7. Mountpoint for Amazon S3: AWS’s file client
AWS Labs describes Mountpoint for Amazon S3 as a file client that mounts an S3 bucket as a local filesystem. It is designed for file-oriented access, not as a blanket replacement for a general-purpose local disk. Review its documented filesystem semantics and supported operations before choosing it for a particular application.
8. s3fs-fuse: an S3-backed FUSE filesystem
s3fs-fuse uses FUSE to present Amazon S3 through a filesystem mount. This is a mount-oriented alternative to a conventional set of object commands. Check the project’s current documentation for supported operations and limitations before relying on it for a workload, especially one that depends on particular filesystem behavior.

9. goofys: a POSIX-like filesystem in Go
goofys is a Go-based filesystem for Amazon S3 that its project describes as POSIX-like. That wording does not establish full POSIX compliance. Consult its documentation for compatibility and operational limits before using it with software that assumes specific filesystem guarantees.
How to choose and use an S3 terminal tool safely
Match the tool to the provider and API coverage
If you need AWS’s high-level S3 conveniences and direct access to individual API operations, the AWS CLI provides both through s3 and s3api. s3cmd, rclone, and MinIO Client document support beyond a single AWS-specific workflow, but compatibility with a particular provider, endpoint, or operation still needs checking.
Check transfer behavior before automating
- For bulk work, confirm wildcard matching, concurrency, credential handling, and integrity-check behavior against the tool’s documentation and release.
- For any sync or mirror command, establish which side is the source and whether destination changes or deletions are possible before scheduling it.
- For server-side copies, verify size limits and other constraints against the version you will run.
- For mounts, confirm that the client’s filesystem semantics suit the application rather than assuming local-disk equivalence.
Account for storage charges and licensing
Free and open-source describes the software, not necessarily the storage it accesses. AWS says S3 storage and transfers can incur charges; applicable costs depend on current terms and usage. Review the relevant license as well: s3cmd documents GPLv2, and MinIO Client’s repository states AGPLv3. Check each project’s current release, platform support, license, and setup instructions before adoption.
