World War Z: Aftermath is best suited to players who want repeatable, team-based horde shooting: it supports four-player online co-op, cross-play among supported PC, PlayStation and Xbox platforms, solo play with AI teammates, and a collection of campaign episodes. The main catches are just as practical: there is no local co-op, Nintendo Switch is not at feature parity, and some modes are limited to newer platforms.
What does Aftermath include?
Aftermath combines campaign episodes set across several locations with class-based progression and survival modes. The package includes the World War Z: Game of the Year Edition episodes in New York, Moscow, Marseille, Jerusalem and Tokyo, as well as newer stories in Rome and Kamchatka, according to the publisher’s game page.

Combat variety comes from eight classes, weapon customization, melee options that include two-handed and dual-wield weapons, and an optional first-person mode. Those systems give players different loadout and combat approaches, although the available sources do not establish how balanced the classes are or how the game performs in every situation.

Online co-op is the clearest reason to choose Aftermath. Saber Interactive describes four-player co-op and cross-play across supported consoles and PC; solo players can play with AI teammates. The Saber Interactive Support FAQ clarifies that cross-play does not include Nintendo Switch.
#1 Best Overall
- Play as both new and returning characters as you take the fight to the undead with a brutal new melee system, decimating zekes with unique moves, perks and dual Wield weapon options like the sickle and cleaver. Fend off new undead monstrosities.
- The Next generation of the zombie Swarm: play in glorious 4k|60 FPS. Endure endless waves of increasingly difficult zombies in the new horde mode XL game mode, featuring hundreds more zombies on screen than ever before possible.
- Deep progression and a new perspective: experience a heart-pounding new perspective with aftermath's immersive new first-person mode option.
- Level up eight unique classes: the gunslinger, hellraiser, Slasher, medic, fixer, exterminator, dronemaster, and all-new Vanguard class; each with their own perks and play styles.
- Customize your weapons to survive any challenge, and conquer new daily missions with special modifiers for bonus rewards.
- Playing online with friends: PC, PlayStation and Xbox players can join across platforms listed by Saber. Check the exact game edition and platform listing for each person before buying.
- Playing alone: AI teammates provide a solo option, but the available evidence does not establish solo difficulty or how it compares with a coordinated human team.
- Playing together in one room: Aftermath has no local or split-screen co-op. It is not a fit if couch co-op is a requirement.
Which platforms get the modes and updates you want?
Mode availability varies by platform generation. Saber lists standard Horde Mode for PC, PS4, PS5 and Xbox consoles, but Horde Mode XL only for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. If XL is the reason you are buying, a PS4 or Xbox One copy is not listed as eligible.
The Switch caveat is broader than cross-play: Saber’s FAQ discusses the original World War Z on Switch, says it cannot cross-play with other platforms, and states that updates for that version are not currently planned. The FAQ does not establish Switch feature parity with Aftermath on other systems, so Switch buyers should verify the current store listing rather than assume the same content and support.

Is there recent content?
In update notes dated October 5, 2026, Saber announced a Walking Dead episode for Extinction mode, two weapons, new perks and mutators, portrait frames, and weekly challenge setups. Saber describes the new gameplay content as free. The notes also introduce a five-weapon Valhalla Raider skin pack; that cosmetic pack is separate from the free gameplay additions. See the Saber Interactive Support FAQ for platform information and the Saber Interactive Support FAQ for the official support entry point; the update’s details are in Saber’s support materials.

- Confirm the platform and mode. Check whether you need standard Horde Mode or Horde Mode XL, and match that against the supported systems listed above.
- Confirm the people you want to play with. Ensure everyone is on a supported PC, PlayStation or Xbox platform; do not count on Switch cross-play.
- Choose the right product listing. Saber says physical copies are available. On Steam, the listing named World War Z: Aftermath Upgrade is DLC and requires the base game; it is not the full game by itself.
- Check current store requirements and edition details. Steam lists 50 GB of storage, 8 GB RAM, Windows 7 and DirectX 11 as minimum requirements. Steam also notes that its client has required Windows 10 or later since January 1, 2024, so check the live listing and client requirements for a Windows 7 PC before purchase.
Steam’s developer-provided content description identifies frequent violence or gore. Steam showed 81% positive from 172 reviews on the Aftermath Upgrade listing when accessed October 7, 2026; that is a changing user-review snapshot, not a critic aggregate or a comprehensive quality score.

How to weigh the pros and cons
| Factor | Why it may appeal | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Online co-op | Four-player co-op, cross-play on supported PC, PlayStation and Xbox systems, and AI teammates for solo play. | No local co-op; Switch does not cross-play with other platforms. |
| Campaign content | Episodes span New York, Moscow, Marseille, Jerusalem, Tokyo, Rome and Kamchatka. | Confirm the edition and platform listing for the content you expect. |
| Combat and progression | Eight classes, weapon customization, varied melee options and optional first-person play. | These features do not by themselves establish balance, matchmaking quality or performance. |
| Horde modes | Standard Horde Mode is listed across PC, PS4, PS5 and Xbox consoles. | Horde Mode XL is listed only for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. |
| Ongoing progress | PROS allows a one-time save transfer. | Cross-progression is not supported; a one-time transfer is not ongoing synchronization. |
| Recent additions | The October 5, 2026 update adds Extinction gameplay and other content. | Switch updates are not currently planned, according to Saber’s FAQ. |
Overall, Aftermath makes the most sense if your group can play online on supported systems and you want campaign missions plus repeatable horde modes. It is a weaker fit for couch co-op, a Switch player seeking cross-platform play or ongoing updates, or an older-console buyer whose main goal is Horde Mode XL.
