The TP-Link Deco M4 can still make sense as an inexpensive mesh system for a modest home, but only if the price, condition, and support status check out. It is a discontinued dual-band Wi-Fi 5 model with optional Ethernet backhaul and two Gigabit ports per unit. Independent testing found decent performance near a node but mediocre range, so its advertised coverage is not a safe planning figure for every home.
What the Deco M4 offers
The Deco M4 is an AC1200-class mesh system. It uses 802.11ac on the 5 GHz band and 802.11n on 2.4 GHz. TP-Link lists maximum theoretical rates of 867 Mbps and 300 Mbps, respectively; AC1200 adds those band figures together. It does not mean that one device will receive 1,167 Mbps, and actual throughput is lower and affected by the client, distance, interference, and whether traffic is crossing a wireless mesh link. TP-Link’s product page gives the manufacturer’s specifications.
Ports and backhaul
Each unit has two Gigabit Ethernet ports that auto-sense WAN or LAN. Ethernet backhaul is supported, letting units communicate over a wired connection instead of relying entirely on wireless links. Two ports per unit are useful for a basic setup, but a wired-heavy home may need an Ethernet switch.
Modes and management
TP-Link lists router and access point modes, app management, guest networks, parental controls, device-based QoS, IPv4/IPv6, and port forwarding. Feature availability and app behavior can differ by hardware revision and firmware. Roaming also depends on client-device support for 802.11 k/v/r and may require configuration. The detailed datasheet cited by TP-Link applies to hardware version 3.0; check the unit label and regional support page rather than assuming every revision or region is identical. - A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
How fast is it in real use?
RTINGS purchased a two-pack and tested it in dual-mesh mode, with supplementary standalone testing. Its review says performance near a unit can suit an internet connection up to about 500 Mbps. That is the review’s assessment of its test configuration, not a guarantee that every Deco M4 installation will deliver 500 Mbps over Wi-Fi. A device’s Wi-Fi capability, distance from a node, mesh-link quality, congestion, and the broadband plan all affect results. RTINGS’ TP-Link Deco M4 review, updated September 25, 2026, describes its methods and findings.
For a 500 Mbps internet plan, the M4 may be adequate when devices are reasonably close to a node and the mesh link is healthy. Do not treat the AC1200 label as evidence that a single device will reach that speed everywhere. For faster plans, many simultaneous high-bandwidth users, or newer Wi-Fi 6/7 clients, the M4’s older Wi-Fi 5 design is a more meaningful limitation.

- JD Power Award ---Highest in customer satisfaction for wireless routers 2017 and 2019
- Dual Band Internet Router upgrades to AC1200 high speed internet(300Mbps on 2. 4GHz + 867Mbps on 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Add more Deco M4 if you need more coverage. All Deco can work seamlessly to create a mesh network.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds
- MU-MIMO technology allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously.
Coverage: marketing claim versus tested range
TP-Link advertises up to 5,500 square feet of coverage for a three-pack and support for up to 100 devices. The manufacturer qualifies these as variable with obstructions, interference, traffic, placement, and client limitations. They are best read as upper-bound marketing claims, not a promise that a particular floor plan will have strong signal throughout.

RTINGS characterizes the M4’s range as mediocre, including in its dual-mesh testing, while describing it as adequate for apartments, condos, and single-story homes. A lab result should not be projected directly onto a different building: walls, floors, neighboring networks, unit placement, and client radios all matter. The review also notes that the M4 lacks DFS support, which can be a disadvantage in congested apartment environments where available channels are crowded.

- Add Deco S4(1-pack) to you existing TP-Link Deco Mesh WiFi system to expand your coverage. All TP-Link Deco Mesh WiFi can work together.
- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: When paired with one or more Deco units, they will work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 2,000 sq. ft. Say good bye to dead zones
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that needs multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Deco Mesh Technology: When paired with one or more Deco units, they work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Who should consider the Deco M4?
Potentially a fit
- You find a clean, fairly priced kit and can confirm its hardware revision, warranty, firmware, and support situation.
- Your home is modest in size or mostly single-story, and you can place nodes where they maintain a good connection.
- Your broadband plan and devices do not require newer Wi-Fi capabilities, and typical performance near a node is more important than maximum range.
- You want optional Ethernet backhaul and can work within two Gigabit ports per unit.
Look at newer mesh systems instead
- You need stronger or more predictable coverage across a large, multi-story, or unusually obstructed home.
- You have a faster broadband plan, Wi-Fi 6/7 devices, or many concurrent high-throughput users.
- Your wireless environment is crowded and DFS channel support matters.
- You need more wired ports, longer security-support runway, or a clearly documented current product and warranty.
Is the Deco M4 still worth buying?
RTINGS identifies the Deco M4 as discontinued and names the Deco S4 as a similar-spec alternative in its review. That does not establish current local stock, pricing, warranty, or support policy for either model; these vary by market and seller. Before buying a remaining listing, compare the total cost for the number of units you need with current alternatives, and verify the exact kit and revision rather than relying on a generic listing title.
- Confirm whether the listing is new, refurbished, or used, and check what warranty applies in your region.
- Check the hardware version on the unit or box and consult the matching local TP-Link support page for firmware and features.
- Confirm pack size and included units, then assess whether two ports per unit are enough or whether a switch will add to the cost.
- Compare the alternative’s Wi-Fi generation, independent range evidence, Ethernet ports and backhaul, support information, and total kit price.
The M4’s strongest case is a low-cost, uncomplicated mesh upgrade for a home and broadband plan that do not need newer Wi-Fi. If the discount is small, or the seller cannot establish condition and support, choosing a current model is the safer decision.
