For most buyers, the right Roku depends on the TV and the feature you actually need: choose the Roku Streaming Stick (HD) for an HD-only TV, the Streaming Stick Plus (4K) for straightforward 4K streaming, the Streaming Stick 4K if you want Dolby Vision or its long-range Wi-Fi receiver, and Roku Ultra for Ethernet, USB, Dolby Atmos support, or its premium remote. If you also want a single device to improve TV audio, consider Streambar SE. These are recommendations based on Roku’s U.S. product guidance and specifications, not independent performance testing.

How to choose the right Roku
1. Match the player to your TV’s resolution
For an HD-only television, the Streaming Stick (HD) is the straightforward choice. For a 4K TV, consider the Streaming Stick Plus (4K), Streaming Stick 4K, or Ultra according to the other features you need. Roku says you need a compatible TV and content to watch in 4K or HDR. For 4K playback, its product details also specify an HDMI input that supports HDCP 2.2. HD stick requirements · Plus requirements
2. Check whether Dolby Vision matters
The Plus lists HDR10+ and HLG, but not Dolby Vision. The Streaming Stick 4K and Ultra list Dolby Vision as well as HDR10+. If Dolby Vision is a requirement, Roku’s specifications point to one of those two models; your TV and the content must also support the format. Roku model comparison

3. Pick connectivity for your actual setup
The Streaming Stick 4K includes a long-range Wi-Fi receiver, according to Roku. Ultra adds Wi-Fi 6 and Ethernet. These are different features, not evidence of measured performance in a particular home. Choose Ethernet if you want a wired connection and your setup allows it; otherwise, weigh the listed Wi-Fi features against where the player and router will sit.
#1 Best Overall
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
4. Pay for Ultra’s extras only if you will use them
Ultra’s case is its combination of Ethernet, USB, Dolby Atmos support, Wi-Fi 6, and a rechargeable, backlit Voice Remote Pro. If those features do not solve a need in your setup, one of the sticks may be a better fit. Atmos also depends on compatible audio equipment. Roku Ultra details
5. Consider Streambar SE when TV audio is part of the problem
Streambar SE combines a Roku streaming player with TV audio in one device, according to Roku’s comparison page. Roku’s cited material does not provide the detailed audio specifications needed to compare its sound directly with separate soundbars, so check the specific audio needs and physical setup before choosing it. How to read Roku’s performance claims
Roku’s Ultra page says the player is “30% faster than any other Roku player,” but the page does not state a test method or publication year for that manufacturer claim. Treat it as Roku’s claim, not an independently verified comparison. The same page describes Roku’s platform as “#1” based on hours streamed, citing Hypothesis Group, December 2024; it does not provide an underlying numeric figure in the cited material. Neither statement establishes how a player will perform in an individual home. Roku Ultra page
