The 2026 Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 GU405 pairs a compact 14-inch OLED screen with an RTX graphics option that Tom’s Guide found capable in gaming, creative work, and an AI benchmark. The trade-offs matter for students: Asus’s US listing showed a $3,599.99 price when checked, the review reported loud fans under demanding loads, and its battery test lasted 8 hours 32 minutes. Those results make the G14 a better fit for GPU-heavy coursework than for someone seeking an inexpensive, quiet, all-day school laptop.

This assessment draws on published testing by Tom’s Guide and GamesRadar+, not independent testing. Their results describe specific configurations and methods; they are useful evidence, not a guarantee of what every GU405 will deliver.

Which 2026 G14 is this, and what does it cost?

The model covered here is the US-market Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 GU405. Asus’s US specification page lists an Intel Core Ultra 9 386H processor, whose integrated NPU is rated by Asus at up to 50 TOPS, and configuration options that include a GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU with 12GB of GDDR7. Tom’s Guide’s review also lists configurations up to an RTX 5080, 32GB of memory, and 2TB of storage. A review’s family-level specification table does not necessarily describe one retail SKU, so check the exact listing rather than assuming every option is combined in every model.

Asus’s US store page showed $3,599.99 when checked, and Tom’s Guide reported that starting price in its October 1, 2026 review. Treat that as a dated US price, not a guaranteed current offer; prices, stock, and configurations can change by retailer, market, and time.

Before comparing listings, verify the model year and GU405 designation along with the GPU, memory, storage, and price. The benchmarked RTX 5070 Ti review unit is not interchangeable with an RTX 5080 configuration, or with a listing from another generation. Asus also cautions that specifications and features vary by model and that actual performance may vary.

What can it do for gaming, creative work, and AI?

Tom’s Guide’s results suggest that the reviewed G14 can serve as more than a gaming machine: the outlet found strong performance in rendering, video transcoding, games, and its local-AI workload. These are results for its tested configuration and review methods, not promises of identical performance in every app or configuration.

Gaming results depend on the game and settings

Tom’s Guide recorded 44 frames per second in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p with ray tracing set to Ultra, and 49 FPS in Black Myth: Wukong at 1080p with the Cinematic preset. It also recorded a 3DMark score of 12,428. These figures help describe the tested machine, but they are not a general rating for every game, resolution, or graphics preset.

The comparison with the outlet’s 2025 RTX 5080 G14 illustrates why one headline benchmark cannot settle a generation comparison. In Tom’s Guide’s tests, the 2025 comparison unit scored 12,370 in 3DMark and reached 49.7 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 under the stated settings, while the 2026 unit reached 49 FPS in Black Myth: Wukong compared with 47 FPS for the 2025 unit. In other words, the older RTX 5080 system led in the listed Cyberpunk result, while the newer unit was slightly ahead in the listed Black Myth result and close in 3DMark.

GamesRadar+ reported that its tested 2026 RTX 5070 Ti configuration was faster than its 2025 RTX 5080 unit in some in-game tests, while some synthetic results slightly favored the 2025 laptop. The publications used different test suites and conditions. Their differing outcomes are a reason to compare results from the games and settings you actually use, not evidence that one model always wins.

Creative and processor-heavy work

In Tom’s Guide’s testing, the 2026 unit scored 2,461 single-core and 16,443 multicore in Geekbench 7, and completed its Handbrake 4K-to-1080p transcode in 3 minutes 19 seconds. For context, the same outlet’s 2025 G14 comparison scored 1,651 single-core and 15,341 multicore in Geekbench 7 and completed that Handbrake task in 3:12. These are outlet results for the reviewed systems, not a prediction for every editing workflow.

That combination of a discrete RTX GPU and a compact chassis could suit students whose work includes GPU-accelerated 3D rendering, video editing, or other demanding creative applications. Whether it is a sensible purchase still depends on the software, project sizes, and configuration involved; the review figures do not establish performance for every course or application.

Local AI: a promising use, not a blanket capability claim

Tom’s Guide recorded 16,558 in its quantized Geekbench AI ONNX GPU test. In that same test, the outlet reported 18,191 for its 2025 G14 and 12,589 for the MSI Stealth 16 AI+. The 2026 model’s result was therefore below the 2025 G14’s in this particular AI benchmark, despite the newer laptop’s strong showing in other areas.

The reviewer also ran a local Hermes Agent workflow and described the G14’s local-AI performance as impressive. That demonstrates one reviewer’s experience with one workflow; it does not establish that the laptop can safely or reliably automate every email or other task. Students considering local AI should check the memory and GPU configuration against the needs of the specific models and tools they intend to run.

Is it a good laptop for students?

The G14 is most compelling when schoolwork genuinely benefits from a dedicated GPU and the student also wants a capable gaming laptop in a relatively compact 14-inch format. For ordinary writing, web research, presentations, and video calls, that hardware and price may be difficult to justify on schoolwork alone.

ASUS MUX ROG Zephyrus G14 14" OLED 3K 120Hz Gaming Laptop - AMD Ryzen 9 270 - - GeForce RTX 5060-Window 11 Home-W/HDMI Cable (Window 11 Home, 16GB RAM | 1TB PCIe SSD)

  • Premium aluminum chassis, just 0.63" thin and 3.31 lbs, combining portability and durability.
  • ROG Intelligent Cooling with liquid metal and 2nd Gen Arc Flow Fans for sustained performance.

It makes more sense for

  • Students taking courses that involve 3D work, rendering, video production, or other GPU-heavy creative applications.
  • Students who want to experiment with local AI and have checked that a particular configuration suits their intended tools.
  • People who need one relatively compact computer for demanding coursework and serious gaming, and can accept the price, fan noise, and battery trade-offs.

It is a weaker fit for

  • Students whose main priority is getting an affordable laptop for typical school tasks.
  • People who need quiet operation during lectures or sustained work in shared study spaces.
  • Anyone who needs a dependable full day away from an outlet under their own workload.

Tom’s Guide described the fans as loud while gaming and rendering in Blender. That is relevant in a quiet classroom or library, particularly when the laptop is under sustained load. Noise-canceling headphones are one possible way to manage the sound, but they do not change the laptop’s fan behavior.

How long does the battery last, and what is it like to carry?

Tom’s Guide measured 8 hours 32 minutes in its continuous web-surfing battery test. GamesRadar+ reported roughly four to five hours during its own regular-workday use, with about another hour and a half after battery saver began. These are different methods and workloads, so they should not be read as competing measurements of the same test or as a precise forecast for a student’s day.

If you need the G14 to last through classes and study sessions without charging, look for a battery result that resembles your workload and plan around the shorter real-world experience if you cannot recharge. A review figure cannot account for every student’s screen brightness, apps, network conditions, or workload.

The 14-inch format supports a more portable setup than a larger gaming laptop, but portability also involves carrying the charger and accepting the fan noise and battery compromises under load. The available review details do not establish a weight comparison here, so weigh the actual unit and charger if carrying burden is a deciding factor.

Should a 2025 G14 owner upgrade?

Do not assume that a new model year alone makes the change worthwhile. In Tom’s Guide’s comparisons, the 2026 G14 improved some results and trailed its 2025 RTX 5080 unit in others, including the listed Cyberpunk and AI tests. GamesRadar+ likewise cautioned that a 2025 owner may not gain enough to justify a four-figure upgrade; that is the reviewer’s judgment, not a rule for every owner.

Compare the price of the exact 2026 configuration with the performance you need in your own apps and games, then consider what your current laptop already handles. A student with a recent G14 that meets coursework needs has a different upgrade case from someone replacing an older machine that cannot manage GPU-heavy work.

What to check before buying

  1. Confirm the exact model and configuration. Check that the listing is a 2026 GU405 and verify its GPU, memory, and storage. Do not rely on a product-family page to describe a specific retail SKU.
  2. Compare the actual price and availability. Asus’s US page showed $3,599.99 when checked, but that dated price may not match a current offer or a listing in another country.
  3. Match performance evidence to your work. Look for results in the games, creative apps, or AI tools you plan to use, with settings and test conditions that are relevant to you.
  4. Decide whether the screen and GPU justify the cost. Tom’s Guide lists a 14-inch, 2880 × 1800, 120Hz OLED display for the reviewed G14 family. Confirm the configuration and screen details on the listing you intend to buy.
  5. Plan for noise and charging. Consider where you will run demanding workloads, whether fan noise is acceptable there, and whether you will have access to power during a typical day.
  6. If upgrading, compare against your current laptop. Use the difference in price and the tasks you cannot currently do—not just the model year—to decide whether the change is worthwhile.
