Wokwi is the stronger fit if you need broad ESP32-family support or firmware options beyond Arduino; Cirkit Designer is worth considering if your priority is an AI-assisted visual design workflow centered on ESP32-S3. The best choice depends on your exact chip, peripherals, firmware framework, and sharing needs—not simply which simulator claims to support ESP32.

What is the difference between Wokwi and Cirkit Designer?

Both run in a browser and support online ESP32 project workflows, but they emphasize different things. Wokwi documents a range of ESP32 variants and several firmware approaches. Cirkit Designer presents a visual circuit-design workflow with AI help for wiring and code, and its ESP32 simulator page focuses on ESP32-S3 Arduino sketches.

Which simulator supports your ESP32 chip and peripherals?

Wokwi: broader documented chip coverage, with component-specific limits

Wokwi’s ESP32 guide lists ESP32, C3, S2, S3, C5 (alpha), C6, C61, H2, S31 (alpha), and P4 (beta). Those labels matter: alpha and beta entries are not equivalent to a blanket promise of mature, complete simulation. The guide also provides a per-chip peripheral matrix and marks some behavior partial, in progress, or unsupported; Bluetooth is listed as not implemented for the chips in the guide.

  • ESP32 is a safe, reliable, and scalable to a variety of applications

Before building around a particular feature, check both your exact variant and the peripheral you intend to use in Wokwi’s ESP32 support guide. A chip appearing in the list does not establish that every peripheral behaves like physical hardware.

Cirkit Designer: an ESP32-S3-centered simulator page

Cirkit’s simulator page describes ESP32-S3 projects with Arduino sketches, connected components, GPIO, Wi-Fi, and IoT workflows. If your target is a different ESP32 variant or you depend on a specific peripheral, verify that exact combination in Cirkit’s current product documentation before committing to the design. Which firmware workflow do you need?

Wokwi is the more flexible starting point if your project is not limited to Arduino. Its ESP32 documentation describes Arduino Core/ESP-IDF-oriented projects as well as MicroPython, CircuitPython, Rust, and custom firmware. Confirm the relevant setup instructions for your project and board in the ESP32 guide.

Cirkit’s ESP32 simulator page highlights Arduino sketches. Its broader documentation describes Arduino coding tools, but the available material does not establish equivalent support for every framework Wokwi documents. If you require ESP-IDF or another toolchain, check Cirkit’s current documentation rather than relying on an older comparison-page status. Cirkit Designer documentation

What do the free plans include, and what about privacy?

Wokwi Community

Wokwi says, “Wokwi is free for personal use.” Its pricing page lists the Community plan at €0 per month, with unlimited simulations, unlimited public projects, and Virtual WiFi. The same page says free projects are public and use a shared public IoT gateway, so this is not a private-project tier. Wokwi documentation · Wokwi pricing

Can you simulate Wi-Fi and IoT projects online?

Both products describe network-related workflows, but their documentation does not make every protocol or network behavior interchangeable. Wokwi documents Wi-Fi simulation, including MQTT, HTTP, and NTP, as well as Virtual WiFi; its free Community plan uses a shared public IoT gateway. Cirkit’s ESP32 page names Wi-Fi and IoT workflows without establishing the same protocol-by-protocol scope. For a specific HTTP server, protocol, or gateway requirement, check the current documentation for that feature and plan before depending on it. HiLetgo ESP-WROOM-32 ESP32 ESP-32S Development Board 2.4GHz Dual-Mode WiFi + Bluetooth Dual Cores Microcontroller Processor Integrated with Antenna RF AMP Filter AP STA for Arduino IDE
  • 2.4GHz Dual Mode WiFi + Bluetooth Development Board

How should you choose between them?

  • Choose Wokwi when your target is one of its documented ESP32-family variants, you need several firmware options, or you want documented simulator tools such as a logic analyzer or GDB debugging.
  • Consider Cirkit Designer when a visual circuit-design experience and AI help with wiring or code are central, and your project fits its ESP32-S3 Arduino-focused workflow.
  • Check the exact hardware behavior first if your design depends on a particular peripheral, Bluetooth, or a less-established chip variant. Consult the simulator’s current support documentation rather than assuming full hardware equivalence.
  • Compare sharing and plan terms before putting nonpublic work online. Wokwi Community projects are public; Cirkit’s comparable terms are not established here.

When should you move from simulation to a physical board?

Simulation is useful for developing and checking project logic, but it cannot establish the behavior of your physical wiring, power supply, radio conditions, or component tolerances. When those factors matter, validate the project on hardware selected for the target chip, pinout, and peripherals. An ESP32-S3 development board is a possible follow-on for an ESP32-S3 project, not a prerequisite for starting in either simulator. Wokwi’s documented board list can help clarify which board workflows it supports. Wokwi ESP32 Simulation
