An NVMe SSD can be installed in an M.2 slot that is compatible but slower—or less suitable—than another slot on the same motherboard. Check your exact motherboard or PC manual: compare each slot’s PCIe generation, lane width, connection and shared resources, then use the slot the manual identifies for the main drive. The best slot is often near the CPU, but that is not a rule that applies to every board.
Why the M.2 slot can matter
M.2 describes the drive’s physical form factor, not a guarantee of its interface or speed. A socket may support NVMe, SATA, or particular drive sizes; an M.2-shaped drive does not necessarily work in every M.2 socket. Check the drive and slot specifications together. Dell’s NVMe guide explains that slot capabilities vary.
For NVMe drives, the host link’s PCIe generation and lane count affect the bandwidth available to the SSD. Dell lists maximum sequential read speeds of 3,000–3,500 MB/s for PCIe Gen 3, up to 7,400 MB/s for Gen 4, and up to 14,000 MB/s for Gen 5. These are generation-level interface ceilings in Dell’s guide, not a promise that a particular drive will achieve those speeds in real use.

Slots on one motherboard can differ in generation or electrical lane width, and some share resources with other components or ports. Depending on the board, using one slot can affect which other devices or ports remain available. Kingston’s SSD FAQs discuss shared PCIe lanes and SATA ports; the motherboard manual is the authority for your particular layout.

Which M.2 slot should hold your main SSD?
Choose by the specifications in your system’s manual, not by slot position alone. PassMark says the best PCIe NVMe slot is the one with the latest generation and greatest number of lanes, and advises checking the motherboard manual for the primary slot, which is usually closest to the CPU. CPU-connected slots may avoid a chipset path, but the impact depends on the board and workload.
- PCIe generation: Compare the slot’s supported generation with the SSD’s. A newer-generation SSD can work at a lower supported generation, but its link will be limited by the available connection.
- Lane width: Check whether the slot is wired for the number of lanes your drive can use. The physical connector does not by itself establish electrical lane width.
- Connection path: Note whether the slot connects to the CPU or chipset, as specified by the manual.
- Drive compatibility: Confirm NVMe support and the supported drive size; do not infer compatibility from the M.2 shape alone.
- Shared resources: Look for notes about disabled SATA ports, shared lanes, or other devices affected by using a particular slot.
For a prebuilt PC, use the exact system model’s setup or service documentation rather than a manual for a similar motherboard. If instructions warn against opening the system or doing so could affect warranty coverage, follow the manufacturer’s guidance.

What one benchmark says—and does not say
PassMark Software tested a Samsung 970 Evo 500GB in a chipset slot and then a main CPU slot, running its PerformanceTest disk benchmark ten times. Its reported standard read result rose from 3,256.31 to 3,326.02 MB/s (+2.41%), and standard write rose from 2,221.50 to 2,275.66 MB/s (+2.44%). The 32KQD20 IOPS result changed from 1,519.89 to 1,611.16 MB/s (+6.01%), while the 4KQD1 result changed from 79.96 to 106.83 MB/s (+33.62%).

The larger difference appeared in one low-queue-depth result; the standard read and write results changed much less. The test page does not provide enough platform detail to predict what another motherboard, drive, or workload will do.

How to check whether your SSD is in the right slot
- Identify the exact system or motherboard model. Find its manual or setup guide from the manufacturer.
- Check the installed drive’s interface and specifications. Confirm that it is NVMe and note the PCIe generation and lane width it supports.
- Compare the M.2 slots in the manual. Check generation, electrical lane width, CPU or chipset connection, supported drive types and sizes, and any shared-resource notes. Use the manual’s recommended primary slot if it is compatible with your drive.
- Verify the negotiated link. Use a suitable system utility to see the PCIe generation and lane width currently negotiated, then compare those values with the drive and slot specifications. The reviewed manufacturer guidance does not prescribe one universal utility.
- Move the drive only if the documentation supports it. Power down and follow the system manufacturer’s installation instructions. Afterward, check that the drive is detected and that the system starts normally.
If the existing drive is compatible and the manual identifies a more suitable slot, relocating it is a sensible first check before buying another SSD. A new drive is not automatically necessary.

Separate a performance issue from a detection or boot problem. First compare the drive’s negotiated PCIe link with the slot and SSD specifications. If the drive is not detected or Windows will not start, also check seating, slot compatibility, firmware settings, and boot mode rather than assuming slot placement is the only cause.

Intel notes that PCIe lane allocation can cause reduced performance or compatibility problems when improperly configured, and advises consulting system documentation. Older systems may also need UEFI support for NVMe boot. Dell’s Windows 11 boot guidance specifies UEFI and GPT. Do not casually change a working system’s storage or boot mode: a change can prevent the existing Windows installation from starting.

Boot detection and Windows startup speed are separate questions. The available evidence does not establish that moving an SSD between slots by itself will make Windows start faster.
