There is no single 3D printer that is best for every buyer. The clearest current recommendations available here are from Popular Mechanics—not the CNET guide named in the original headline—and they divide models by use: all-around printing, value, mid-range capability, flexible filament and multi-color output. Your best choice depends on what you want to make, which materials you need, and how much noise, setup and maintenance you can accept.
The CNET search excerpt identifies the Bambu P2S as an all-around choice, but does not provide the article date, full picks or testing details. It is not enough to verify CNET’s complete ranking or attribute another publisher’s test results to CNET.
Which 3D printer is best for your needs?
Popular Mechanics’ buying guide, updated September 25, 2026, names five printers for distinct use cases. These are that guide’s recommendations and testing observations, not a verified CNET ranking.
| Use case | Popular Mechanics pick | Why it may fit | Trade-off to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best overall | Bambu P2S AMS Combo | Integrated app, online model services and print-failure detection make operation more approachable. | Multi-color prints can be slow and wasteful; reliance on an integrated ecosystem may limit flexibility. |
| Best value | Elegoo Centauri Carbon | An enclosed printer presented as an affordable general-use option. | The tested original configuration was noisy and lacked multi-color printing. The guide also discusses a newer Carbon 2 Combo, so check the exact generation and included equipment in the current listing. |
| Best mid-range | QIDI Q2 | Enclosure and higher-temperature capability support users considering tougher materials. The guide reports a 370°C nozzle, a chamber reaching up to 65°C, and a hardened-steel nozzle. | The reviewer noted setup-documentation gaps, fan noise while idle and a clogged nozzle/fan issue during testing. |
| Best for flexible filament | Creality Ender-3 V3 SE | The reviewer highlights its performance with TPU, a flexible filament. | It lacks Wi-Fi and calls for more manual tuning than newer models. |
| Best for multi-color printing | Snapmaker U1 | Its four-toolhead system can avoid some purge waste associated with changing colors through a single nozzle. | Setup took longer, and the enclosure lid is a separate purchase. |
These labels are starting points, not guarantees that a printer suits every project in a category. Confirm the current model generation, included bundle, build volume and supported materials before buying; the guide’s specific capability notes should not be generalized to other printers.

How do you choose a printer that suits your projects?
Start with the objects you want to make
For larger functional parts or rugged objects, FDM is generally the more practical starting point. It builds objects by depositing filament, and is generally faster for larger prints. For small models where fine detail matters most, resin can produce more detailed output, but it brings a wash-and-cure workflow and more handling precautions.
Think about the largest object you expect to print, not just the first novelty model. A printer’s build volume determines whether a part fits in one piece; the product’s material support determines whether it can use the filament or resin suited to the job. The Popular Mechanics guide describes testing PLA, PETG and TPU, but that does not mean every recommended printer supports all three equally well.
Rank #2
- One-Click Automatic Printing: Experience hassle-free 3D printing with the Adventurer 5M Series. Enjoy automatic bed leveling for flawless first layers, ensuring consistent adhesion and saving time with no manual adjustments required.
- 12X Ultra Fast Printing: Featuring a CoreXY structure with 600mm/s travel speed and 20000mm/s² acceleration, the AD5M maximizes efficiency, reduces production cycles, and ensures high precision, making it ideal for rapid prototyping and mass production.
- Smart and Efficient Design: Quick 3-second nozzle changes, a high-flow 32mm³/s nozzle, and fast 35-second warm-up to 200°C deliver stable high-speed printing. Its dual-sided PEI platform and versatile options provide easy removal and adaptability for various creative projects.
- Superior Print Quality & Adaptability: Combines a 280°C direct drive extruder with dual-fan cooling and vibration compensation. Includes a standard 0.4mm nozzle and accepts optional sizes from 0.25mm to 0.8mm to fit various printing needs.
- Real-Time App Monitoring: Monitor print progress, adjust settings, and receive instant status alerts remotely with the Flash Studio. Smart mobile control ensures a seamless, effortless printing experience anytime, anywhere.
Choose how much convenience you want
An integrated app, model service and error detection can lower the effort of getting a print started and catching failures. The trade-off is less freedom if you prefer custom settings, third-party tools or a more open workflow. Consider whether convenience features are worth potential dependence on a manufacturer’s software ecosystem.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Account for the room and ongoing effort
- Noise: The review flags noise for some enclosed models, including the Centauri Carbon and QIDI Q2. Enclosure alone does not mean silent operation.
- Monitoring: Error detection may help identify a failed print, but it does not eliminate the need to learn basic printer operation or check on long jobs.
- Waste: Multi-color printing through a single nozzle may produce purge waste; a multi-toolhead approach can reduce that specific source of waste, though it may add setup complexity.
- Added equipment: Check whether an enclosure, lid or other desired accessory is included in the exact bundle. The Snapmaker U1’s enclosure lid is sold separately according to the guide.
Should you buy an FDM or resin 3D printer?
| Consideration | FDM | Resin |
|---|---|---|
| Best suited to | Larger prints and rugged functional parts | Fine detail |
| Typical workflow | Prints with filament | Requires washing and curing after printing |
| Handling | Generally simpler home setup | Requires significant safety precautions; uncured resin is toxic |
For a first home printer, FDM is usually the easier fit if you want practical parts and a simpler workflow. Choose resin when fine detail is the priority and you can safely manage uncured material, washing and curing. The available guide does not establish that one technology is universally better.

What did the accessible printer testing cover?
Popular Mechanics author Dan Stout says he tested recommended printers by making objects ranging from detailed busts and decorative lithophanes to pegboard organizers, table-saw rails and shop-vacuum accessories. The guide reports more than 100 hours of print time per recommended printer; that is the author’s stated workload, not an independently audited industry measure.
The described process included printing with PLA, PETG and TPU, using manufacturers’ slicers, varying functional and decorative models, timing setup from unboxing to a completed Benchy, assessing interface and slicer usability and how much monitoring prints needed, logging failures, and evaluating consistency, performance and precision. Those methods and observations belong to Popular Mechanics. They cannot establish what CNET tested.

What the CNET headline does—and does not—establish
The CNET headline and search excerpt reproduced by Useful Diary say the Bambu P2S is the all-around choice and praise its quality, speed and accuracy. The accessible excerpt does not show the publication date, exact model or bundle, the rest of the picks, or CNET’s methodology. Those details remain unverified, so the Popular Mechanics picks above should not be read as CNET recommendations.
