The pink-and-black checkerboard in Garry’s Mod (GMod) means the game cannot find a texture needed by an object or part of a map. Start by checking whether it happens on one map or addon, then confirm that content’s requirements and whether its assets are available to GMod. Since a July 2025 update, most Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2 episodic content is included by default, so buying either game is no longer a sensible blanket first step.
What the checkerboard means
Facepunch identifies the black-and-purple checkerboard as a missing texture: GMod has encountered an object or map surface but cannot access the texture asset it needs. Its technical reference calls this the pink-and-black error texture. Facepunch’s materials reference describes the error texture.
Do not confuse it with a large red “ERROR” sign. The checkerboard indicates a missing texture or material; the red sign indicates a missing model. The two symptoms can have different causes, even though both can result from unavailable content. See Facepunch’s FAQ.
Why old advice about CS:S needs an update
Facepunch’s July 2025 update added most Counter-Strike: Source (CS:S) and Half-Life 2 episodic content to GMod by default. Facepunch says this should address a majority of missing-content cases, but does not claim it resolves every missing texture or model. The update does not include those games’ maps, voice-over files, or music. Facepunch’s update notes explain the change and its limits.

That means you should not assume you need to buy CS:S just because you see a checkerboard. A particular map or addon may still depend on assets that are not included, or may have an installation or authoring problem.
Diagnose the problem by its scope
It appears on one map, prop, or addon
Start with the specific content showing the checkerboard. Read the map or addon’s description and requirements, and look for any named game content or asset pack. The missing asset may be specific to that item rather than evidence that your whole GMod installation is broken.

It appears across unrelated content
If several unrelated maps or addons show missing textures, check whether the required game content is installed and available to GMod. If you have recently changed files or installations, validating game files is a reasonable next software check; it cannot supply a third-party asset that is not part of the game.
It is a red ERROR sign, not a checkerboard
Treat a red “ERROR” model as a missing-model symptom, not a texture error. Check the affected map or addon for model requirements. The July 2025 content update covers missing-content issues broadly but does not guarantee that every missing model will be resolved.

Check content availability and mounting
If a map or addon names a required asset, first confirm that the relevant content is installed. If it is installed but remains unavailable to GMod, check whether it is mounted correctly. Mounting tells GMod to scan specified folders and VPK files for game content.
Facepunch’s mounting guide documents configuration for a dedicated server. Its examples are server-oriented; do not assume the same configuration steps apply to every client setup. Use the instructions appropriate to the installation where the problem occurs.

Validate game files if the issue persists
When checking the content requirements and mounting does not resolve a broader problem, follow Facepunch’s current guidance for validating Source game files in its common-problems article. Validation can address damaged or missing files in the games being checked, but it does not guarantee a fix for an addon’s absent or separate assets.

A practical troubleshooting order
- Identify the symptom: checkerboard means a missing texture; a red “ERROR” sign means a missing model.
- Check where it occurs: note whether it is limited to one map, prop, or addon, or affects unrelated content too.
- Read the affected content’s requirements: look for specifically named games, assets, or packs, and confirm they are installed.
- Check mounting if the content is installed: verify that GMod can access the required folders or VPK files, using guidance for the relevant client or server setup.
- Validate game files when appropriate: use Facepunch’s troubleshooting instructions if the issue continues, while keeping third-party asset problems separate from game-file problems.
