Open Settings > Storage to see the storage controls on your Fire tablet. The available options depend on Fire OS: Fire OS 7 offers Archive Now under Free Up Space, while Fire OS 8 provides archiving and manual cleanup under Internal Storage. Start with eligible downloads and apps you no longer need on the device, then consider a compatible microSD card if you need more capacity.
Free up space with the Storage settings
- Open Settings, then tap Storage. Review the controls shown for your Fire OS version. Amazon’s developer documentation also identifies the Storage activity as the destination for its package-storage management action on supported Fire tablet generations. Amazon developer documentation.
- On Fire OS 7: Under Free Up Space, select Archive Now to archive eligible unused Amazon content.
- On Fire OS 8: Select Internal Storage. Choose Archive Now to archive eligible content automatically, or Free Up Space to manage eligible content manually. Amazon documents these version-specific paths in its Fire tablet storage guidance.
Choose what to archive or remove
Use Auto Archive for infrequently used apps
Amazon says Auto Archive can archive non-Amazon apps that have not been used frequently during the past 60 days. You can turn it on or off at Settings > Storage > Auto Archive. Archived apps can be reinstalled from that page or the App Store. If you uninstall an archived app from its App info page, its data is removed as well.
Remove Amazon downloads when you only need local space
Amazon-purchased content is automatically saved to your Amazon account’s Cloud. Removing a download from the tablet frees local storage without deleting that content from the account. This makes removing downloaded Amazon content a useful option when you may want it again later.
Review local-only content before deleting
Check personal files and app content before removing them, especially if you do not have another copy. Archiving, removing a download, uninstalling an app, and clearing app data are different actions; do not assume that deleting local material is reversible.

Clear an app cache without confusing it with app data
There is no single cache-clearing path established here for every Fire tablet app. Amazon’s documented procedure is for Amazon Music: open the app, tap its Settings icon, open Settings, scroll to Storage, then select Clear Cache. For another app, check that app’s own settings or instructions.
Clearing cached files is not the same as clearing app data. The effects of clearing data vary and may affect saved settings or locally stored content, so avoid treating it as a harmless storage shortcut.

Use a microSD card only after checking compatibility
Amazon says compatible Fire tablets from the 5th generation onward support microSD cards. The supported maximum capacity varies by generation, and the card’s storage mode affects what it can hold and how safely it can be moved. Check your exact tablet model and intended app before buying a card.

These are maximum capacities in Amazon’s undated help guidance, not guarantees that every card or app will work. Amazon also says Fire OS 6 and higher cannot install apps and games to a microSD card. See its generation-specific card capacity guidance.

Portable storage: files and media you may move
Choose portable storage when you want to store and transfer files, photos, or videos. Some copyrighted app media may remain on the card and may not transfer between devices. Kindle books on the card are accessible on another device only when it uses the same Amazon account. Kindle and Prime Video apps support portable storage only.
To safely remove a portable card, use Settings > Storage.

Internal storage: added device storage with removal risks
Internal storage is intended to expand the tablet’s device storage. Apps and games can use the card only when the app supports card storage. Setting up a card in this mode formats it for the tablet.

Amazon warns that internally formatted cards are not intended to be removed casually. If a removed card is lost, data stored on it is permanently lost; app data on the card is unavailable if apps are reinstalled. The card must be reformatted before it can be used with the tablet again, and it cannot be used on another device without reformatting and losing its data. Read Amazon’s microSD setup and storage-mode guidance before choosing a mode.

Restart if the storage display seems stale
If the tablet behaves intermittently after cleanup or the storage display does not appear to reflect changes, restart it: hold the power button until the shutdown request appears, select OK, then press the power button again to turn the tablet on. Amazon provides these restart steps.
A factory reset is not a routine storage-cleanup step. Begin with the reversible storage controls and inspect what you intend to remove before deleting it.
