If you know the drive password, remove it through the laptop’s BIOS/UEFI Security settings or, on supported models, through Toshiba Hardware Setup or Security Assist. The exact menu depends on the model. If you have forgotten the password, do not assume a BIOS reset, Windows reinstall, or password utility will unlock the drive or recover its data.

First identify which password the laptop is asking for

A prompt before Windows starts can be for a BIOS/UEFI password or a separate HDD/SSD user password. They are not interchangeable: deleting the BIOS user password does not necessarily remove a registered drive password. Dynabook’s Windows 10 instructions explicitly distinguish the two (Dynabook Password Utility instructions).

Before following menu directions, note the exact wording of the prompt and the full Toshiba laptop model. The available settings and utilities vary by computer, and no model was specified here, so a particular startup key or menu sequence cannot be confirmed.

Remove a known HDD/SSD password

Dynabook documents removing a known HDD password through firmware settings, and says some computers also provide Toshiba Hardware Setup or Security Assist. Use the interface available on your model; do not assume either Windows utility is installed. See Dynabook’s UEFI, BIOS, and HDD password guidance.

  1. Open BIOS/UEFI setup. Use the startup method documented for your exact Toshiba model. Startup keys differ, so check the model’s manual or support page rather than guessing.
  2. Open Security. Look for the HDD or storage-drive password setting. Confirm that the setting refers to the drive password, not only the BIOS/UEFI user or supervisor password.
  3. Choose the option to remove or delete the HDD password. Enter the current password when prompted and follow the on-screen confirmation. Dynabook describes changing or removing known passwords through firmware or supported utilities.
  4. Save the change and restart. If the drive-password prompt still appears, return to the settings and verify that you changed the HDD/SSD password rather than a separate BIOS/UEFI password.

If your model includes Toshiba Hardware Setup or Security Assist, its password controls may offer another route. Toshiba’s Password Utility FAQ describes setting, deleting, and changing passwords, including an HDD password, but the utility’s availability and options depend on the computer (Toshiba Password Utility FAQ).

If you have forgotten the drive password

There is no universal recovery method established for a forgotten laptop HDD/SSD password. Do not rely on a generic BIOS reset, Windows reinstall, or third-party password utility to unlock the drive or restore its contents.

Toshiba’s Canvio Slim II security manual warns: “If you forgot your password, the drive cannot be unlocked and you can no longer access the data.” That warning applies to the Canvio Slim II software and external drive; it is not proof of a universal policy for every Toshiba laptop drive. The manual also mentions secure erase for that product, but that is not a general laptop-drive recovery procedure. See the Canvio Slim II security manual.

If the inaccessible data matters, avoid actions intended to erase, initialize, or reinstall to the locked drive. Contact Dynabook with the full laptop model and the exact prompt, and ask specifically what service is available for that drive. A legacy Dynabook bulletin says a forgotten BIOS password can be removed only by a Toshiba Authorized Service Provider; that statement concerns BIOS passwords, not a promise that a provider can recover data or remove every forgotten HDD/SSD password (Dynabook password guidance).

When a replacement drive is an option

If your goal is to use the laptop and you accept that the old drive’s data may remain inaccessible, replacing the storage device may be an option. Confirm the exact laptop model and compatible drive type before buying or installing a replacement. Replacing the drive does not unlock the old one or recover its data.
