No. Reconnecting establishes a new WebSocket connection; it does not automatically restore the application session or recover messages and work from the old connection. The WebSocket protocol handles the transport, while the application must define what continuity means.
Does reconnecting a WebSocket restore my session?
Not by itself. A WebSocket connection is considered closed when its underlying TCP connection closes. It is a clean close only when the WebSocket closing handshake completed first; an unexpected transport loss makes the connection fail. Establishing a replacement connection requires a new opening handshake, but a successful handshake confirms only that the new transport connection was established—not that the application restored its previous logical session. RFC 6455, sections 4 and 7.1
Transport recovery and application recovery are separate tasks:
Recommended Free Tools
- Transport recovery establishes a new connection through the WebSocket opening handshake.
- Application recovery decides whether to reauthenticate, restore subscriptions, retrieve missed events, reconcile pending work, and resume the user’s state.
RFC 6455 defines the WebSocket transport and leaves application message semantics to a higher layer. If a service needs session continuity, its application protocol must specify how to provide it. RFC 6455, section 1.5

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
What happens to messages when a WebSocket reconnects?
The protocol does not automatically replay messages from the old connection or tell the application which events were missed. If the connection fails while a message or operation is in flight, the client may not know whether the server received or processed it. Reopening the socket does not resolve that uncertainty.
Applications that require reliable continuity need to define recovery behavior at their own layer. Depending on the service, that can include:

- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Resuming subscriptions and retrieving events missed during the outage.
- Using sequence numbers or cursors to identify the last event the client processed.
- Making operations safe to retry, or assigning request identifiers so the server can recognize duplicates.
- Checking the operation’s status before repeating work whose outcome was unknown when the connection failed.
These are application design choices, not automatic WebSocket guarantees. The right approach depends on whether the application can tolerate missed events, duplicate requests, or a brief interruption in state.

Usually not after an abnormal closure. Failures can be temporary or persistent. If many clients retry immediately and keep retrying, their connection attempts can make it harder for a service to recover. Randomized, increasingly longer delays spread retries over time.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
RFC 6455 section 7.2.3 says: “To prevent this, clients SHOULD use some form of backoff when trying to reconnect after abnormal closures as described in this section.” It gives a random delay of zero to five seconds as a reasonable example before the first retry, then describes increasingly longer delays, such as truncated binary exponential backoff, for subsequent failures. The RFC leaves the specific parameters to the client; its example is implementation guidance, not a required timer or a measured statistic. RFC 6455, section 7.2.3

- Recognize that the old connection ended. Distinguish a completed closing handshake from an unexpected loss where possible; do not treat a new connection as continuation of the old one.
- Retry with backoff after abnormal closure. Add randomness to the delay and increase it after repeated failures rather than sending an immediate, persistent stream of attempts. Choose limits and reset behavior that suit the application; RFC 6455 does not prescribe one universal schedule.
- Perform a fresh handshake and restore application state deliberately. Re-establish whatever authentication, subscriptions, or application context the service requires.
- Reconcile the interruption. Fetch missed events if supported, and check or safely retry operations whose outcomes are uncertain. Avoid assuming that a message was delivered or undelivered solely because the socket disconnected.
- Stop or slow attempts when recovery is not progressing. Persistent failures may need a longer delay or user-visible error rather than an endless rapid retry loop.
The governing distinction is simple: reconnecting can restore transport availability, but continuity of messages, subscriptions, sessions, and operations must be designed by the application.
