In standard Minecraft, you can make flint and steel from flint and iron, but that makes an ignition tool—not a steel ingot. Steel ingots are added by particular mods or Bedrock add-ons, and their recipes depend on the exact installation and version.
Make flint and steel in vanilla Minecraft
Open your inventory crafting grid and combine one flint with one iron ingot to craft flint and steel. You do not need a crafting table. The tool lights campfires, candles, cakes with candles, Nether portals, and TNT; its durability decreases as you use it. See Minecraft’s flint-and-steel instructions.

The name is easy to misread: this recipe does not produce a steel ingot. Vanilla Minecraft does not have a supported universal steel-ingot recipe in the sources cited here. Minecraft’s article also notes that iron can start fires, as it did before steel was invented.
Make a steel ingot with the mod or add-on in your world
There is no single recipe to apply across modded Minecraft. First identify the mod or add-on, its version, and—on Java—its mod loader. Then use that installation’s recipe guide or in-game recipe viewer. The examples below illustrate why: they use different intermediary items and processing steps, and neither is a general vanilla recipe.

Why steel may appear in a Bedrock world
Bedrock add-ons can define new items and recipes through resource and behavior packs. Microsoft documents shaped, shapeless, and furnace recipe definitions; a configured furnace recipe transforms its specified input into its specified output. That explains how an add-on can add steel, but does not identify the recipe for any particular add-on. Check the pack’s documentation or recipe viewer rather than assuming all Bedrock worlds include steel.

- Confirm whether you mean the vanilla flint-and-steel tool or a steel ingot.
- Check whether the world is Java or Bedrock, then identify its mod, modpack, or add-on and version.
- Search that installation’s recipe guide or in-game recipe viewer for “steel” and follow its stated intermediary item, processing block, and fuel requirements.
If you share the platform, mod or add-on name, and version, someone can give steps for that specific setup. A search phrase such as “make steel Minecraft Mekanism” still needs the actual modpack and version to establish which recipe applies.
