SEP-41 is Stellar’s Soroban Token Interface: a shared set of contract calls for fungible tokens. It is conceptually similar to Ethereum’s ERC-20, but it is not a drop-in equivalent. On Stellar, the built-in Stellar Asset Contract (SAC) exposes existing Stellar assets through the SEP-41 interface, while a custom Soroban contract can implement SEP-41 when a token needs its own behavior. The SEP-41 proposal is marked Draft, version 0.5.2, updated August 24, 2026, so its status and details may change.
What is SEP-41?
SEP-41 defines a common contract interface for fungible tokens on Soroban, Stellar’s smart-contract platform. The proposal describes its purpose as a standard interface for token contracts, without requiring every token to expose functions specific to Stellar Assets. See the SEP-41 proposal for its current specification and status.
A shared interface makes it easier for other contracts and tools to call familiar token operations across compatible implementations. But matching function names alone does not ensure compatibility: authorization rules, metadata, and event formats also matter.

What operations does the interface cover?
The interface includes methods for checking balances and allowances; approving and transferring tokens; transferring from an account using an allowance; burning tokens; and reading metadata such as decimals, name, and symbol. Individual implementations may have additional logic beyond these common operations.

What is SEP-41, and how is it different from ERC-20?
Both standards provide a familiar contract-facing surface for fungible-token operations, which can help applications work with different tokens through common calls. Stellar documentation describes SEP-41 as similar to ERC-20, but that does not make them interchangeable: the specifications, authorization models, events, and surrounding ecosystems differ. The available documentation does not establish that every ERC-20 wallet, contract, or tool supports SEP-41.
“Efficient” should not be read as a proven speed or savings claim. Stellar’s comparison describes costs qualitatively, but does not provide a controlled benchmark showing that SEP-41 is categorically more efficient than ERC-20.

How does SEP-41 relate to Stellar’s Asset Contract?
The Stellar Asset Contract is a built-in contract interface for existing Stellar assets, including XLM and issued assets. It lets Soroban contracts interact with the same asset represented through Stellar’s account and trustline system; it is an API to that asset, not a bridged duplicate. Stellar documentation says the SAC is the way contracts interact with Stellar assets. The SAC implements the SEP-41 interface, allowing compatible contracts to use common token calls while the asset retains its Stellar asset semantics. See the Stellar Asset Contract documentation.

A SEP-41 contract token is different: it is a custom Soroban contract with its own storage and logic. That approach can suit tokens requiring behavior such as transfer fees, vesting, or custom minting and burning rules. Those features come with implementation and ecosystem tradeoffs; they are not implied by SEP-41 itself.

- Multiple ways of locking: you can use the matching screws to lock up the steel bitcoin wallets; You can also lock them up and hide them in other places if you still feel unsafe; The hole on the bitcoin wallet measures 6 mm/ 0.24 inch in diameter, suitable for hanging
Which Stellar token model fits the use case?
Stellar’s token comparison presents three broad choices. The right one depends on whether the priority is ordinary asset behavior, custom contract logic, or compliance features.
| Model | Good fit | Tradeoffs and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Stellar Asset with SAC | Payments, simple or fiat-backed assets, and smart-contract interaction while retaining Stellar asset semantics. | Uses the trustline-based asset model; native operations are very low cost and SAC operations are moderate cost, according to Stellar’s qualitative comparison. Issuer controls remain relevant. |
| SEP-41 contract token | DeFi primitives, custom tokenomics, transfer fees, vesting, hooks, or custom minting and burning rules. | Requires custom logic and storage; execution costs are higher than Stellar Asset operations, and ecosystem support is less widespread. |
| SEP-57 / T-REX | Regulated or institutional assets that need on-chain identity and compliance rules. | More complex and costly to execute; check support for the intended wallet, transfer flow, and indexer. |
For developers evaluating a custom implementation, Stellar’s comparison points to an OpenZeppelin fungible-token reference implementation. Confirm that its current behavior and dependencies fit the application rather than assuming a reference implementation covers every project requirement.

Implementation details that affect compatibility
Authorization and failed calls
Token calls may depend on Stellar asset authorization as well as Soroban authorization. The Stellar token-interface guide describes standard failure handling through trapping: a failed call reverts state changes. Missing authorization, insufficient balance, and insufficient allowance are examples of failures an integration must handle.

An allowance sets a spender’s limit; it does not reserve that amount of the owner’s balance. Approving a new allowance replaces the previous value. The SEP-41 proposal advises clients changing an allowance to set it to zero and confirm it was not spent before approving a new amount, reducing the risk that a spender uses the old allowance before the replacement takes effect.

Metadata must follow the expected format
Implementations should store standard metadata in the expected format. The developer guide notes that this allows constant values to be read directly from ledger state, rather than relying only on contract calls. Integrators should verify that the implementation exposes metadata in the form their application expects.
Event consumers must account for SAC differences
SAC events can have a different shape from events emitted by SEP-41 contract tokens. In the documented comparison, SAC events include an additional final topic containing the SEP-11 asset identifier. An indexer that assumes the same topic layout for every implementation may mis-parse events. SAC behavior also differs when a transfer involves the issuer: it may emit a mint or burn event instead of a transfer event. Event consumers should account for these cases.
Protocol-version note
Stellar’s comparison includes a Protocol 26 (Yardstick) note: assigning a smart contract as the SAC owner can let the contract manage balances and transfer rules, and SAC trustlines may be created programmatically. This is version-sensitive guidance, not a universal setup instruction. Check the protocol context and deployment requirements for the network you intend to use before relying on it.
