A binary file editor lets you inspect and change a file’s raw bytes. It is often called a hex editor because it commonly displays each byte in hexadecimal, sometimes beside a character view. Use one when you need to examine exact stored values or make a small, well-understood change—not as a substitute for an editor that understands the file’s format.
What a binary file editor shows
Applications such as document, image, or audio editors interpret a file according to its format and present its contents in a useful form. A binary file editor instead exposes the underlying byte values. “Binary file editor,” “byte editor,” and “hex editor” are commonly used names for this kind of tool. Hexadecimal is a base-16 number system that uses the symbols 0 through F. A byte’s value can therefore be shown as a pair of hexadecimal digits. Some editors also display a character panel, but that panel is only one interpretation of the bytes: data that is not text may appear as unreadable or meaningless characters.

Example: the Binary Editor in Visual Studio
Microsoft documents a view with file addresses or offsets, hexadecimal values, and an ASCII representation. The editor can search for ASCII strings or sequences of hexadecimal bytes. The offset helps identify where data occurs in the file; it does not, by itself, explain what that data means. Microsoft Learn: Binary Editor

When to use one—and when not to
A binary editor is useful when the task calls for exact byte-level inspection rather than an interpreted view. For example, Visual Studio’s documentation describes using its Binary Editor to inspect or make minor changes to custom resources and resource types that its other editors do not support. It can also help locate a known byte sequence or ASCII string. Microsoft Learn: Binary Editor
For routine changes to an image, document, or other structured file, use software that understands that format whenever possible. The raw-byte view does not identify fields or explain how a change may affect the rest of the file. A byte that looks simple to alter may be part of a structure with dependencies elsewhere.

Why byte-level edits can damage a file
Editing bytes without understanding the file format can change how software interprets the file. Microsoft warns that incorrect edits to resources such as dialog boxes, images, or menus can corrupt them and make them unreadable in their native editor. Microsoft Learn: Binary Editor
Editing behavior varies by tool. GNU Emacs Hexl mode displays file contents in hexadecimal and converts them back when saving. In that mode, ordinary typing overwrites bytes; the Emacs manual describes this behavior as intended to reduce the risk of spoiling alignment. That is a specific mode’s behavior, not a guarantee for every binary editor. GNU Emacs manual: Hexl mode

- Work on a copy, not the only copy of an important file.
- Know what the target bytes represent before changing them.
- Check the result in an application that supports the file’s format.
Binary editor versus a format-aware editor
The choice depends on what you need to see and whether the tool understands the file’s structure:

Do you need to install one?
Not necessarily. If you only need the definition, or you can make your change in software designed for the file type, a binary editor may add complexity without helping. Consider one when you have a concrete byte-level task and can identify what you intend to inspect or change. The term describes a category of tools; the sources cited here do not establish that any one product is best.
