Peer review is the evaluation of scholarly work by people with relevant expertise. In journal publishing, reviewers assess a submitted paper and advise the editor, who decides whether to accept it, reject it, or request changes. The process can help improve work and assess its suitability for publication, but it does not guarantee that a paper is correct.

What does “peer reviewed” mean?

“Peer reviewed” means a work has undergone a defined evaluation by experts in a relevant field. A scholarly review describes it as subjecting an author’s work, research, or ideas to scrutiny by experts in the same field (Kelly, Sadeghieh, and Adeli).

The term is most often used for journal articles, but expert review also applies to grant proposals, clinical research protocols, research programs, books, conference papers, and funding decisions. The criteria and final decision depend on the journal, funder, institution, or conference handling the work. The National Institutes of Health describes peer review as expert critique of written scientific work or an investigator’s research program (NIH Office of Intramural Research).

How does journal peer review work?

A journal’s process varies, but a common sequence is:

  1. Submission: The author sends a manuscript to a journal.
  2. Editorial screening: An editor checks whether the submission fits the journal and meets basic requirements. Some papers are declined at this stage without external review.
  3. Reviewer invitations: The editor invites specialists whose expertise is relevant to the paper.
  4. Expert assessment: Reviewers evaluate elements such as the research question, methods, analysis, interpretation, contribution, and ethical concerns. They provide feedback and may recommend an outcome.
  5. Editorial decision: The editor considers the reviews and decides whether to accept, reject, or ask the authors to revise.
  6. Revision and further review: If changes are requested, authors submit a revised manuscript. The editor may send it for another review round before deciding.

Reviewers advise; the editor makes the journal’s publication decision. A reviewer’s recommendation is not itself an acceptance or rejection.

What are the different types of peer review?

The labels describe how identities and review materials are handled. Practices differ, so a journal’s stated policy matters more than the label alone.

Model Identity and disclosure Trade-off to understand
Single-blind Reviewers know the authors’ identities; authors do not know the reviewers’ identities. Anonymity may protect reviewers, but it can limit accountability.
Double-blind Author and reviewer identities are concealed from one another, subject to practical limits. Concealment may be imperfect when a manuscript or field makes identities apparent.
Open review Identities are disclosed; some versions also publish reports or invite wider participation. Greater transparency and accountability may come with reviewers feeling less able to offer candid criticism.

These models are not a universal ranking from best to worst. Journals can define “open review” or anonymity differently, including whether reports and author responses are published.

What does peer review tell you about a study?

It tells you that the work passed through a particular expert-evaluation process. Reviewers can identify weaknesses, raise questions, and help authors improve a manuscript. Review may also help a journal judge whether a paper is technically sound, significant or original where relevant, and suitable for its audience.

It does not establish that every claim was independently replicated, that every error was found, or that the conclusions are certain. Reviewers work within limits of time, expertise, and available information; bias and delay are also recognized concerns. To assess a finding, consider the methods and evidence, the authors’ conflicts and stated limitations, later corrections, and whether other studies support the result.

How long does peer review take?

There is no universal turnaround time. A 2024 instructional overview in PubMed Central reports a typical range of 4–8 weeks or more from submission to editorial decision, while noting that duration depends on factors such as reviewer availability, late reviews, editorial workload, and whether authors follow submission instructions (The Peer Review Process). Treat that as a source-specific estimate, not a deadline or guarantee from every journal.

Why is confidentiality important?

Reviewers may receive unpublished work and other privileged information. NIH guidance says review materials should not be copied, retained, or used unless permission is specifically granted by the journal or reviewing organization and the author. The applicable organization’s rules govern the reviewer’s obligations.
