Adaptive high beams are headlights that reshape parts of the high-beam pattern to reduce light aimed at detected vehicles while keeping other areas of the road brightly illuminated. The formal term used in U.S. regulations is adaptive driving beam (ADB). Unlike conventional automatic high-beam assist, ADB can shade part of the beam without switching the entire system to low beams.
What adaptive high beams do
Sensors detect other traffic, and the headlight system dynamically changes portions of its forward beam. It can create a shaded area around detected oncoming or preceding vehicles while retaining long-range illumination in other directions. NHTSA defines ADB as a long-range forward-visibility beam that automatically modifies portions of projected light to reduce glare to other road users (NHTSA, 2022; NHTSA final rule).
This describes the system’s intended behavior, not a guarantee that glare is eliminated in every situation.

How ADB differs from other headlight features
| Feature | Beam behavior | Primary purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic high-beam assist | Switches between the full high-beam and low-beam patterns. | Manage when high beams are used. NHTSA |
| Adaptive driving beam (adaptive high beams) | Dynamically shades portions of the high-beam pattern around detected traffic while leaving other areas illuminated. | Maintain long-range visibility while reducing light directed toward other road users. IIHS |
| Curve-adaptive headlights | Turn or pivot toward the direction of travel to light a bend. | Improve illumination around curves. IIHS |
“Adaptive headlights” can refer to different technologies, including curve-adaptive lights. The name alone does not establish that a vehicle has ADB; check the vehicle’s equipment description or owner’s manual.

- Enter trim of your vehicle to confirm the fitment; Important: Those HID bulbs are ONLY for replacement of your stock D1S/DS1 bulb, not for Halogen bulb EVEN IF it shows "Fit"
- Tips for BMW chassis codes, fit E90/E91/E92/E93,F07/F10/F20/F21/F30/F31/F34/F80 and E60/E61 since year 2006
- The light is same as OEM bulb and is like the sun also make the driver more comfortable.Produces light up to 3 times than halogen bulb, lumen of HID is up to 3600LM while lumen of halogen lamp is 800LM,and lower watts
- Scientific design can reduce the chance of rain leakage and short circuit, the lifespan of the bulb is five times than the halogen bulb with only more stable light output
What U.S. rules say
On February 15, 2022, NHTSA announced a final rule amending Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 to permit automakers to install adaptive driving beams on new vehicles subject to performance requirements. The final rule was published on February 22, 2022, and uses a definition derived from SAE J3069 MAR2021 (NHTSA announcement; Federal Register rule).
This describes U.S. federal requirements; it should not be taken as a description of UNECE or other countries’ rules. Availability also depends on vehicle, market, model year, and trim. IIHS reports that only a few manufacturers offer ADB in the U.S.; verify a particular vehicle’s specifications rather than assuming the feature is included.

What testing says about glare
ADB is designed to reduce glare, but performance is not identical across systems or situations. NHTSA’s technical assessment evaluated European ADB systems and found instances where measured illuminance exceeded derived low-beam glare limits. The report highlighted moving-curve and intersection scenarios; some systems also could not control glare to low-beam levels in motorcycle scenarios (NHTSA, Adaptive Driving Beam Headlighting System Glare Assessment). These findings apply to the systems and conditions evaluated, not necessarily every ADB system.

That comparison is limited to the tested vehicles and setup (IIHS, “Headlights,” updated July 2026). It does not establish a crash-reduction effect for ADB. IIHS’s broader statistics—that about half of traffic deaths occur in darkness or at dawn or dusk, and that 5% of headlight systems it tested for model year 2026 had excessive glare, compared with 21% for model year 2017—describe headlight context, not ADB-specific outcomes.

How to check whether a vehicle has ADB
- Look in the vehicle’s official equipment list for “adaptive driving beam,” “adaptive high beam,” or wording that describes partial beam shading. A listing for automatic high-beam assist alone means the system switches between high and low beams; it does not confirm ADB.
- Check the owner’s manual for how the system is identified, enabled, and operated. Names and controls vary by vehicle.
- Confirm availability for the exact model year, trim, and market. A feature may be optional or unavailable on otherwise similar vehicles.
