For procedural audio in .NET, choose the library or API around the work you need it to do: generating and processing samples, mixing simultaneous sounds, or positioning audio in a game world. NAudio is the .NET-centered option to investigate for general audio work; XAudio2 targets low-level Windows game audio; SDL3_mixer handles decoding and straightforward mixing; and OpenAL’s source-and-listener model fits spatial audio. None is established here as the fastest or universally best choice.

Start by defining what “procedural audio” means in your project

The phrase can describe several different jobs, and they do not all require the same audio foundation:

  • Sample generation or signal processing: create or transform blocks of audio samples.
  • Voice mixing: combine music, effects, and other simultaneous sounds.
  • World-space positioning: make sounds appear to come from locations relative to a listener.

Also identify the target operating systems and .NET runtime before settling on an API. A sound-processing feature is not useful if the required playback or capture backend is unavailable on a deployment target.

Compare the four options by scope and constraints

Option What it covers Consider it when Important constraint
NAudio .NET audio playback, recording, conversion, and manipulation; the NAudio 3 repository describes modular packages, effects, a sampler, MIDI, and VST 3 hosting. You want a .NET-oriented library and need to investigate its effects or sampler facilities. The repository README identifies net9.0 as the minimum target for NAudio 3 and describes different backends by OS. Windows-specific packages are not cross-platform, and the README says a macOS CoreAudio backend is still a work in progress. Check the repository README and project overview for current details.
XAudio2 A low-level game-audio API for mixing and signal processing, with source, submix, and mastering voices. Your target is Windows/DirectX and you need control over an audio graph. Microsoft documents XAudio2 as a low-level C++ API. A .NET project must account for interop or an engine/framework integration. Microsoft’s XAudio2 introduction describes its intended capabilities and model.
SDL3_mixer Decoding, multiple tracks, effects, device playback or in-memory rendering, and basic positional behavior. You need practical multi-track playback and mixing, with simple positioning rather than a full spatial engine. The documentation says SDL3_mixer is not a full 3D audio engine. Its functions and behavior should not be assumed to apply to a different SDL generation. See the SDL3_mixer documentation.
OpenAL A 3D audio model organized around sound sources and a listener; OpenTK documents OpenAL bindings. Source/listener spatialization is central to the application. The cited references do not establish current .NET package compatibility or deployment setup. Verify the binding, native library, and target platform combination. OpenAL and the OpenTK.Audio namespace reference describe the relevant model and binding reference.

Choose based on platform and audio control

For a .NET-centered signal chain: investigate NAudio

NAudio is the broadest .NET library in this comparison: its stated scope includes playback, recording, conversion, and manipulation. Its current repository summary describes NAudio 3 as modular, but that does not make every package or backend available everywhere. It lists Windows-only WASAPI, WinMM, ASIO, DMO, and WinForms packages, Linux ALSA output and capture, and a macOS CoreAudio backend that remains in progress. Confirm the current release and the specific backend your app needs rather than treating “cross-platform core” as a promise of identical device support.

  • Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools

For an effect chain, NAudio’s IAudioEffect reference describes in-place block processing of interleaved floating-point samples and an explicit format-configuration step. It also says implementations must not allocate in the steady-state processing path. Design audio callbacks and processing blocks accordingly: prepare buffers and configuration outside real-time processing, then reuse them while processing.

For low-level Windows game audio: evaluate XAudio2

Microsoft describes XAudio2 as a low-latency game-audio API with dynamic buffers and sample-accurate playback. Its source voices feed submix voices, which can combine signals before they reach a mastering voice. That structure is relevant when a game needs a controllable mixing and signal-processing graph rather than only a high-level playback helper. It is Windows/DirectX-oriented; Microsoft’s audio guidance for DirectX games provides that platform context.

  • Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools

Because XAudio2 is documented as a C++ API, a managed project must choose and validate its route into that API. The cited material does not establish a particular .NET wrapper or integration as the recommended choice.

For straightforward multi-track audio: consider SDL3_mixer

SDL3_mixer documents tracks with gain and frequency-ratio controls, effects, device playback, in-memory rendering, and basic positional APIs. Many operations use sample-frame timing, and the documentation includes helpers for converting between milliseconds and frames. Those features can suit an app that needs to play and mix multiple sounds without building a full spatial-audio system.

Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen USB-C Audio Interface
  • The new generation of the artist's interface: Connect your mic to Scarlett's 4th Gen mic pres. Plug in your guitar. Fire up the included software. Start making your first big hit
  • Studio-quality sound: With a huge 120dB dynamic range, the newest generation of Scarlett uses the same converters as Focusrite’s flagship interfaces, found in the world's biggest studios
  • Never lose a great take: Scarlett 4th Gen's Auto Gain sets the perfect level for your mic or guitar, and Clip Safe prevents clipping, so you can focus on the music
  • Find your signature sound: Air mode lifts vocals and guitars to the front of the mix, adding musical presence and rich harmonic drive to your recordings
  • With Scarlett 4th Gen, you have all you need to record, mix and master your music: Includes industry-leading recording software and a full collection of record-making plugins

Its documentation explicitly distinguishes basic positional behavior from a full 3D audio engine. Confirm that your project is using SDL3_mixer: do not transfer its documented function names or behavior to another SDL generation without checking that generation’s documentation.

For source-and-listener spatialization: consider OpenAL

OpenAL’s model maps directly to a common game-audio requirement: place sound sources in 3D space and define a listener. OpenTK’s audio namespace reference identifies OpenAL bindings, but the cited information does not verify current package compatibility or a complete deployment recipe for a particular .NET runtime and operating system. Check the selected binding and native runtime distribution together for every target platform.

Use these questions to make the decision

  • Where must the app run? Match each target OS to the specific output or capture backend, not just the library’s general platform description.
  • Which .NET runtime is required? For NAudio 3, the repository README identifies net9.0 as the minimum target; verify current release details before adopting that requirement.
  • How much control does the audio graph need? A managed utility library, a low-level game-audio graph, and a mixer with track controls expose different levels of abstraction.
  • What does “spatial” mean for this app? Basic left/right or surround positioning may be sufficient; source-and-listener 3D audio is a more specific requirement.
  • Are real-time processing constraints important? If processing blocks during playback, heed the API’s allocation and buffer-handling requirements. Do not infer comparative latency or speed from feature descriptions.

What the available documentation does not establish

The cited documentation supports distinctions in feature scope, platform orientation, and spatial-audio model; it does not provide comparative benchmarks. There is no basis here to declare one option fastest, lowest-latency in a measured project, or best for every .NET game. Likewise, the OpenTK reference does not by itself confirm the current compatibility of a specific package/runtime combination. Validate the precise versions, bindings, native dependencies, and deployment targets your project will ship.
