You generally should not install a standalone su file by copying it into /system/bin or /system/xbin. On modern Android, the supported approach is to install a root solution such as Magisk using the instructions for your exact device. Magisk’s systemless method patches a device-specific boot or recovery image and provides superuser functionality, including a su command. The correct image and process depend on your phone’s model, firmware, bootloader, and partition layout.
What “installing a su binary” means on Android
A su executable is only one piece of a rooted Android setup. It does not by itself unlock the bootloader, modify the boot process appropriately, manage superuser requests, or account for the security checks used by your device. Magisk’s tools documentation lists su among its binaries, while its user installation process integrates Magisk through a patched image. See the Magisk project documentation and its installation instructions.
Magisk describes systemless installation as its only officially supported method. Its deployment notes are aimed at developers, explicitly caution against treating their short proof-of-concept commands as a user tutorial, and should not be copied as a generic rooting recipe. Use the current user instructions and device-specific guidance instead.

Check whether your device can be rooted safely
Before changing anything, establish the exact configuration. A procedure that works for one model or firmware may not apply to another version of the same phone.
#1 Best Overall
- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
- Record the manufacturer, exact model and regional variant, Android release, and full build or firmware version.
- Check whether the manufacturer and carrier permit bootloader unlocking for that exact model. The Magisk instructions assume an already-unlocked bootloader; they do not establish that every device can be unlocked.
- Confirm the device’s ramdisk and recovery configuration. The supported route may use a boot image or recovery image, and instructions differ for devices without a boot ramdisk.
- Obtain the matching stock firmware image from a source appropriate to your device. Do not patch an image from a different model, region, or build.
- Back up data you cannot afford to lose, and understand how you would restore stock images or recover the device before proceeding.
- Start from a clean boot image. Magisk advises removing other boot-image modifications, for example by restoring the stock boot image or using a non-prerooted custom ROM.
- If using a wired computer connection, use a cable that supports data and fits both devices’ ports. A cable is only a connection accessory; it does not unlock or root the phone.
Magisk’s installation documentation says, “This tutorial assumes you already know how to use adb and fastboot.” If you are unfamiliar with those tools, first learn the commands and recovery options for your specific device rather than experimenting with generic instructions.
Use the device-specific installation route
- Read the current official instructions. Start with the Magisk installation guide, then check manufacturer- and model-specific guidance. Confirm it matches your Android build and image layout.
- Unlock the bootloader only if supported. Follow the manufacturer’s process for your exact device. Unlocking may erase user data; do not assume the outcome is identical across brands or models.
- Prepare the correct stock image. Use the boot or recovery image specified for your configuration and remove conflicting boot modifications as directed by the project’s instructions.
- Patch and install only as documented for your device. The exact image, app flow, and flashing steps vary. Do not substitute a random
subinary or use a generic command sequence in place of the official procedure. - Keep a recovery path. Preserve the matching original firmware and follow the documented restoration method if the phone does not boot or the installation must be reversed.
Because no particular phone, build, or bootloader state is specified here, there is no safe universal image, command, or recovery sequence to provide. The device’s live documentation is essential.

Understand the security and maintenance trade-offs
Android Verified Boot checks executable code and data in the Android version being booted, including the kernel and relevant partitions. Android’s platform documentation explains that a mismatch with an expected verified hash can prevent data from being used and lead to an error state; it also describes rollback protection. Exact implementation details vary by device. See the Android Verified Boot documentation.
Rooting changes the device’s security posture. Google warns that modified or rooted Android devices lose some of Google’s security protections, may miss automatic security updates, and can allow unapproved apps broad access to device data. Consider whether the apps and tasks that motivate rooting justify that risk and the ongoing work of maintaining a modified device. See Google’s guidance on modified Android devices.

Manufacturer-specific consequences are not universal
For applicable Samsung devices, Magisk warns that installation trips Knox and that first installation requires a full data wipe. These warnings are specific to the relevant Samsung installation path; they should not be assumed to describe every Android device. Check the instructions for the exact model before deciding whether to proceed.

When not to proceed
- You cannot confirm the exact model, region, build, or matching firmware image.
- The bootloader cannot be unlocked through a supported route, or you do not understand the unlock and data-wipe consequences.
- You do not have a backup or a credible way to restore the device if it fails to boot.
- You need the protections or update behavior that rooting may weaken, or depend on apps that may reject modified devices.
