Some smartphones are harder to repair because their parts are difficult to reach, held in place with stubborn adhesive, or dependent on parts, instructions, tools, or software that are hard to obtain. A phone with modular components and accessible fasteners may be more practical to fix, but repairability depends on the exact model and repair—not just the brand or a single score.
Repairability is also different from durability. A phone can resist water and drops yet be difficult to open; an easy-to-open phone can still have a fragile screen or limited software support. Compare repair access, parts supply, repair cost, and support lifetime together.
Why are some phones harder to repair?
Parts may be difficult to reach
A repair starts with access. A screen, rear panel, or battery secured with adhesive may require heat, careful prying, replacement adhesive, or a procedure that risks damaging the part being removed. A component can be replaceable in principle but difficult to reach safely.
Recommended Free Tools
The repair sequence matters, too. If a charging port or battery sits behind a fragile screen, reaching it can add time and breakage risk. A modular component that comes out independently is often more straightforward to replace than one soldered into or integrated with a larger assembly. Adhesive alone does not make a part impossible to repair: its release method, the access path, replacement seals, and the instructions all affect the job. The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre identifies removable fasteners and connectors, accessible tools, and direct access to frequently failing parts as design choices that support repairability. European Commission Joint Research Centre: Why repairability matters.

Parts, tools, and instructions may be missing
Even a well-designed repair is not practical without the correct model-specific part, the tools to install it, and reliable instructions. Screw types, new adhesive, or a procedure that requires specialized tools can raise the difficulty. Manufacturer parts, documentation, and calibration support can help both owners and independent repairers; their absence can limit who can complete the work. iFixit’s assessments include parts and instructions among the factors that can shape a model’s repairability. iFixit smartphone repairability scores.
Do not assume a generic tool set or replacement part fits every phone. Check the exact model and repair procedure before buying anything. A precision screwdriver may help with a screw-fastened repair, but it cannot solve an adhesive, parts-supply, or software-access problem.

Replacement parts may need software support
Some hardware replacements also require calibration or firmware access. That creates a separate barrier from physical access: a component might be removable, but the repair may still depend on software tools or permissions. EU rules for covered products provide for non-discriminatory access for professional repairers to software or firmware needed for replacement; this is a requirement within that framework, not a guarantee that every repair everywhere is supported. European Commission: Smartphones and tablets.
Does water resistance make a phone harder to repair?
Not necessarily. Sealing, thinness, rigidity, battery capacity, and compact internal layouts can interact with repair access, but water resistance does not by itself prove that a phone is difficult to repair. The useful question is how the particular model is assembled and what its repair procedure requires. Opening a sealed phone may also affect its water resistance; check the manufacturer’s guidance and the repair method rather than assuming the original protection will be restored.

What does the EU phone repairability label mean?
For covered smartphones and slate tablets placed on the EU market from 20 June 2025, the energy label includes a repairability class from A (most repairable) to E (least repairable). The European Commission says the model’s six repairability-index parameters can be viewed through its EPREL details. Use the class to screen models, then check the underlying details: a label is not a repair quote and does not promise that the part you need is affordable or in stock.
The EU ecodesign rules apply from 20 June 2025 to covered smartphones, feature phones, cordless phones, and slate tablets placed on that market. The Commission lists exclusions, including roll-up flexible-display devices and high-security communication smartphones. Energy-labelling requirements from the same date apply to smartphones and slate tablets. These are EU market rules, not worldwide requirements.

What the covered EU requirements include
The Commission describes provisions concerning accidental drops and scratches, dust and water protection, battery durability, disassembly and repair, spare-parts availability, operating-system upgrades, and professional repairers’ access to relevant software or firmware. Its current policy page gives these specific requirements and estimates:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Battery endurance: at least 800 charge-discharge cycles while retaining at least 80% of initial capacity.
- Operating-system upgrades: at least five years after the last unit of a model is placed on the market.
- Critical spare parts: delivery within 5–10 working days and availability for seven years after the model’s sales end on the EU market. The exact obligation varies by part and access conditions; consult the regulation for the applicable requirement.
- Estimated lifetime effect: the Commission estimates that a mid-range smartphone’s average lifetime could rise from 3.0 to 4.1 years with the same stock. This is a scenario estimate, not a measured outcome for every phone or market.
- Estimated energy savings: almost 14 terawatt-hours of primary energy per year by 2030 for phones and tablets under the rules.
The Commission describes the policy as focusing on “measures to extend product lifetime (reparability, upgradability, battery life).” The estimates and requirements above are the Commission’s figures; they should not be read as a ranking of individual models.

How should you compare two smartphones?
Start with the exact model and the repair you might need. Scores can help narrow a choice, but different scoring systems measure different things and can change over time.
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Label or score | For applicable EU models, check the class and EPREL model details. For independent teardown scores, identify the scoring organization and the scorecard version. |
| Access to common repairs | Look at the route to the screen, battery, charging port, and back cover, and whether other parts must be removed first. |
| Fasteners and adhesive | Check screw types, clips, adhesive release method, and whether new adhesive or seals are required. |
| Parts and instructions | Verify that the exact model’s parts and usable service documentation are available in your region. |
| Software and support | Find out whether the replacement needs calibration or firmware access and how long the phone remains eligible for operating-system upgrades. |
| Cost and risk | Get a local repair quote and check parts cost, warranty implications, and the risk of damage during the repair. These vary by model and region; a score does not establish them. |
Which smartphones are easier to repair?
There is no universal ranking that captures every repair, market, or scoring method. The EU label is useful where it applies; iFixit’s separate teardown scores run from zero (unrepairable) to ten (easiest to repair). iFixit says its rubric is updated, so older devices may receive a different score if rescored. Compare models within the same system and consult the current model scorecard rather than treating scores as interchangeable.
Examples on iFixit’s live page illustrate why one score or brand reputation is not enough. Its assessment of the 2025 Fairphone 6 describes adhesive-free screen and battery repairs, modularity, and parts and instructions available from the manufacturer. Its Google Pixel 10 entry describes prioritized screen access and more accessible battery and charging-port repairs, while noting adhesive on many components. Its Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge assessment credits a more easily removed battery and modular charging port but flags tightly glued screen and rear-cover construction. These are model-specific descriptions from the live page, not an exhaustive market comparison or a claim about every phone from those manufacturers. See iFixit’s current smartphone scorecards.
Can you replace your phone’s battery or screen?
That depends on the exact model, the part, the tools and instructions available, and whether the repair requires calibration or firmware access. Before attempting it, confirm the model number, find the relevant procedure, check parts availability and local pricing, and consider whether opening the phone could affect its warranty or water resistance. A repairability score cannot tell you whether a particular repair is safe or economical for your situation.
