The iPhone 18 Pro’s variable aperture lets you choose between four settings on its 48MP Fusion Main camera: ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8, and ƒ/4.0. Use a wider setting when you need more light; choose ƒ/4.0 when you want more of a group or scene to remain in focus. You can adjust the aperture manually in Camera Controls, though the best setting depends on the light and what you are photographing.
What the variable aperture does
Aperture is the opening in a camera lens that lets light reach the sensor. The f-number describes its size: a lower number means a wider opening. On the iPhone 18 Pro, the physical aperture in the main camera can use four listed settings. Apple identifies variable aperture as useful for low-light capture and says ƒ/4 can help keep more of a group in focus. Those are trade-offs, not guarantees of a particular image or look.
This is a hardware aperture adjustment, not a software slider for background-blur strength. How much background separation you see depends on the scene and capture conditions; Apple’s specifications do not quantify the resulting blur.
Choose among the four aperture settings

The intermediate settings are useful steps between the light-gathering end of the range and the deeper-focus end. They do not promise a specific exposure, blur amount, or image-quality improvement. Apple lists these four values; do not treat the aperture as continuously adjustable.

How to change the aperture manually
- Open the Camera app and tap the Camera Controls button.
- Select Lens Aperture, then choose the aperture setting you want.
- If exposure needs further adjustment, use the manual shutter-speed and white-balance controls, and check the exposure histogram.
Apple’s guide describes manual aperture, shutter speed, and white balance controls for iPhone 18 Pro models. Labels and screen flow may vary with iOS updates, so consult the current Apple guide to advanced camera tools if the controls look different. Third-party camera apps may implement their own controls; the Camera app instructions do not establish that another app offers the same options.
Which camera has the variable aperture?

What the specifications do—and do not—tell you
Apple’s published values describe the available aperture settings, not the results of an independent performance test. A wider aperture lets in more light, while stopping down reduces light and increases depth of field; the outcome in a particular photo also depends on its lighting and composition. The available specifications do not establish a quantified exposure benefit, guaranteed background blur, noise reduction, or sharper results. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro announcement describes the intended uses, while the technical specifications list the hardware values.
