Before an AI coding agent implements an interface, agree on the screens, user tasks, and important states it should produce. Review that design as a frame or prototype first; then give the approved design and constraints to the agent. Code can still be part of the review, but a preview is not proof that the result is production-ready or accessible.
What should you decide before asking AI to build the interface?
Define the interface’s purpose and boundaries before implementation begins. Give the team and agent enough detail to assess the same intended result:
- Audience and task: Who will use the interface, and what should they be able to accomplish?
- Platform and outcome: Where will it run, and what does a successful task look like?
- Screens and states: List the screens, interactions, and relevant states, including empty, loading, error, and completed states where applicable.
- Constraints: Note accessibility needs, technical limits, and other requirements that affect the design.
- Existing design system: Identify the relevant components, styles, variables, and design frames.
Figma’s Figma Make guidance recommends direct prompts and stating constraints up front. Specificity gives the agent a more useful target than a broad request such as “make a dashboard.”
Choose the right checkpoint for the question
“Draw it first” does not have to mean producing a polished mockup. Choose the lightest form of review that lets the team answer its current question.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
| Checkpoint | Best for reviewing | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Static wireframe or design frame | Screen structure, content, and visual hierarchy | How navigation or interactions behave |
| Interactive prototype | Navigation, flow, and interaction assumptions | Whether the eventual production implementation is sound |
| Running code preview | How the implemented UI renders and behaves in its target environment | Whether the code is production quality or meets accessibility requirements |
Figma Make is documented as a way to create functional prototypes, web apps, and interactive UI, with previews that can be edited and iterated. Its Make documentation also describes plan mode, which lets a team review and refine a structured plan before code generation. A static frame may be enough to decide hierarchy; use an interactive prototype when the flow itself is uncertain.
How to put a design checkpoint into an AI workflow
- Write the brief. State the audience, task, platform, expected outcome, constraints, screens, states, and interactions. Avoid leaving essential behavior to inference.
- Provide design context. When available, select or attach relevant frames, components, variables, and styles. Figma says frames carry structured design data and are preferable to screenshots when possible; screenshots can communicate general direction but do not reliably convey exact values such as colors. Figma Make’s guidance and the Figma MCP documentation describe ways to use this context with AI agents.
- Ask for a plan when the work is complex. Review the proposed screens, flow, and assumptions before letting the agent generate code. Correct missing states or misunderstood requirements at this point.
- Review the whole flow. Inspect related screens together, not just the most polished one. Look for weak hierarchy, redundant controls, inconsistent spacing or typography, missing states, and components that diverge from the design system. Figma’s code-to-canvas guidance recommends broad flow review and refinement before feedback or handoff.
- Give targeted feedback. Point to the element or region that needs a change, or anchor an annotation to the relevant preview area. Figma’s Make guidance recommends focused edits or annotations rather than relying only on a broad revision prompt.
- Hand off the approved target. Give the implementation team the reviewed design context. Dev Mode can expose layer properties and annotations for handoff; after implementation changes, compare the running result with the reviewed frames and assess behavior and accessibility separately. See Figma’s Dev Mode guide.
Why structured design context beats a screenshot alone
A screenshot shows appearance, but it may not tell an agent which parts are reusable components, how variables are defined, or what layout values apply. Figma frames, components, and variables can provide more explicit context. The Figma MCP server is designed to share design information with compatible AI agents, including context for code generation from selected frames, and can write native Figma content back to the canvas.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 22 inch class (21.5″ viewable) Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
Figma recommends its remote MCP server for most users. Its documentation says only clients listed in the Figma MCP Catalog can connect, so check client compatibility rather than assuming any coding agent will work with it.
What a preview can—and cannot—tell you
A visual preview helps reveal layout, hierarchy, and some interaction problems. It does not certify that the interface meets accessibility standards. For example, WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.3 sets contrast requirements for text; assess the applicable criterion directly rather than inferring compliance from how a screen looks. See the W3C explanation of Contrast (Minimum).

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Likewise, a promising preview is not the same as a production-ready implementation. Figma’s May 28, 2026 announcement about local-code editing quoted the company’s position: “Shipping production code should happen intentionally, through your team’s development process.” That is Figma’s product statement, not independent evidence that a generated interface is ready to ship. The announcement described local-code editing as a limited beta for selected users of its Mac beta desktop app; rollout and access can change.

Make the checkpoint useful, not ceremonial
- Review the flow against the user task, not just visual polish.
- Check that required screens and states are present before approving implementation.
- Use existing components and design-system context where they apply.
- Record specific decisions and annotations so they survive handoff.
- After implementation, inspect behavior and accessibility independently of the preview.
