The Mac operating system is macOS, Apple’s software for Mac computers. It provides the core environment and tools people use to interact with a Mac and run applications. A Mac is the computer; macOS is the operating system installed on it.
What does macOS mean?
macOS is Apple’s operating system for Mac computers. An operating system supplies the core software environment in which a computer runs applications and provides the tools people use to work with it. Apple describes macOS as “the operating system that makes a Mac a Mac” on its Mac page.
Is macOS the same as a Mac?
No. The terms refer to different things: a Mac is the computer, while macOS is its operating system. The processor is a separate hardware component. Apple documents both Intel-based Macs and Macs with Apple silicon, so the processor depends on the particular Mac model; it is not another name for macOS.
| Term | What it refers to |
|---|---|
| Mac | The computer |
| macOS | Apple’s operating system and software environment for Mac computers |
| Intel or Apple silicon | The processor hardware used in a particular Mac model |

What does the operating system do?
macOS provides the system environment and user-facing tools through which people use their Mac and run applications. In practical terms, the operating system is the software layer that makes the computer usable and gives applications an environment in which to run; it is not the physical device itself.
Is macOS based on Unix?
macOS has a Unix-based technical heritage. Apple’s archived technical overview describes Darwin as the foundation of OS X and identifies BSD, Mach, and Apple technologies in its makeup. That page provides historical, high-level context, not a complete description of current macOS internals. See Apple’s archived Darwin architecture overview.
