You can connect PromptOT to Grok through MCP, the protocol PromptOT uses to expose prompt-management tools and xAI supports for custom connectors. For the documented remote connector setup, use PromptOT’s hosted MCP endpoint and add it at grok.com/connectors. Grok Bot has a separate integrations interface: its current help describes plugins installed through Marketplace, so do not assume the same menu or account flow applies to both products.

What the PromptOT–Grok connection does

PromptOT stores and manages prompts; its MCP server makes prompt actions available to a compatible assistant. PromptOT documents tools for listing, creating, editing, versioning, publishing, and inspecting prompts. After you connect it, Grok can use the tools your account authorizes—for example, to find prompts in a project or compile a prompt with supplied variables.

This connection gives Grok access to PromptOT tools. It does not change Grok’s underlying model or system instructions. The actual actions available depend on the configured transport, authentication, and scopes.

Choose the right Grok interface

xAI documents two relevant routes that should not be treated as one shared screen. For Grok’s custom MCP connectors, its instructions use grok.com/connectors. For Grok Bot, current help describes app integrations as plugins installed through Marketplace; see Use the computer and apps and Get started for Bot setup and prerequisites.

A PromptOT tutorial dated September 11, 2026 describes a Grok Bot Plugins/Connectors flow and reports particular menu wording. xAI’s current documentation does not reproduce that exact path. Treat the tutorial’s labels as its author’s account of the interface, not as a guaranteed menu sequence. Availability can also depend on your account and organizational policies; follow the options visible in your own account.

Choose a PromptOT connection method

PromptOT documents a hosted HTTP MCP transport for browser-based clients and a local stdio package for desktop MCP clients. For Grok’s remote custom connector, the hosted endpoint is the more direct fit. xAI states: “Your MCP server must be reachable over the public internet.” A local-only process or address will not be reachable by Grok’s servers.

Method Best fit Network and credential considerations
Hosted HTTP with OAuth Browser and remote connector clients, including the documented Grok connector route. Uses a hosted endpoint rather than requiring you to run a local process. PromptOT documents OAuth 2.1 + PKCE for browser-client authorization; complete the sign-in and consent prompts when requested.
Local stdio with a key Desktop MCP clients that can start a local process. Grok’s remote servers cannot reach a local-only service. Making a local server available through a tunnel exposes it to the public internet and adds a separate service and URL lifecycle; do not expose sensitive internal systems casually.

PromptOT’s current setup details, including its transport options and authentication guidance, are in its MCP server documentation. Check the live installation instructions for the endpoint and authentication fields rather than guessing their values.

Connect PromptOT to Grok’s custom connector

  1. Prepare PromptOT access. Open the PromptOT dashboard and select the project you intend Grok to use. If you are configuring the local-key method, generate an MCP key from that project’s API Keys page. Grant only the scopes needed for the task. If using hosted OAuth, be ready to sign in and approve the requested access instead.
  2. Open xAI’s connector setup. Go to grok.com/connectors, choose New Connector, then Custom, following xAI’s documented flow.
  3. Enter the PromptOT server details. Use the hosted MCP endpoint and authentication values shown by PromptOT’s current installation instructions. Complete any authentication fields Grok requires. Do not substitute a local address that is not publicly reachable.
  4. Save and check the discovered tools. xAI says Grok discovers the tools exposed by the MCP server. Review the tools and access requested before using the connector.
  5. Try a read-only request first. Ask Grok something specific, such as, “What prompts do I have in my outbound project?” Confirm that the results correspond to the intended PromptOT project. Then try compiling a prompt with a harmless test variable.

Use PromptOT from Grok Bot

If you mean Grok Bot rather than Grok’s standard connector page, start with xAI’s current Bot instructions: open Marketplace and look for the relevant plugin or integration. Install or connect it if it is available to your account, authenticate if prompted, and attach or invoke it in a conversation using the controls the Bot interface provides. The exact labels and availability may change, so use the current Bot UI rather than relying on the tutorial’s reported Settings → Plugins wording.

Limit access to what your workflow needs

PromptOT documents read, write, and AI scope categories. Choose access based on the action you actually need, and avoid granting broad write permissions when your workflow only requires finding or compiling prompts.

Workflow Access approach Practical safeguard
Find or inspect prompts Use the required read access; do not add write access just for convenience. Test with a read-only request and verify the project and returned prompt.
Create, edit, or version prompts Add the relevant write access only if these actions are part of the workflow. Review proposed changes before relying on them.
Publish prompts Allow publishing only when the workflow genuinely requires it. Review the final prompt before publishing to production.

The vendor tutorial gives prompt editing and publishing as possible examples, but that is not independent confirmation that every action works in every Grok interface or account. Validate the specific tools and permissions available in your setup before depending on them.

Troubleshoot connection problems

  • Grok cannot connect: Check that the server URL is the current PromptOT hosted endpoint and is publicly reachable. A local-only address will not work for xAI’s remote connector.
  • Authentication fails or tools are missing: Recheck the PromptOT authentication method and consent, then review the key’s scopes if you configured a key. The available tools depend on what the server exposes and what access is authorized.
  • The menu or plugin is absent: Confirm whether you are using Grok’s connector page or Grok Bot. Their documented paths differ, and account or organization settings can affect availability.
  • A prompt lookup returns unexpected results: Check the selected PromptOT project and ask a narrower read-only question before testing any write action.
