Yes—some third-party Xbox controllers can be updated without an Xbox console, usually with a Windows PC. The exact updater, supported operating system, connection method, and any button sequence or calibration step depend on the controller’s maker and model. Find the model-specific instructions on the manufacturer’s official support page before downloading anything.
Before you begin: identify the exact controller
Check the label on the controller, its packaging, or the manufacturer’s software to confirm the precise model. Do not choose firmware just because a controller is Xbox-compatible: a maker may use different update routes for different models.
On the official support page, find that model and verify the updater name, supported operating system, connection instructions, and any required steps after installation. Firmware versions and app requirements can change; the examples below reflect manufacturer guidance checked on October 7, 2026.
Choose the manufacturer’s update route
Third-party controllers do not share one universal updater. Depending on the model, the process may use an app, a separate utility, or a manual firmware file.

| Manufacturer and example | Official update route | Computer support and important limits |
|---|---|---|
| PowerA | Gamer HQ or the Compatibility Updater Tool, depending on controller and purpose. | PowerA says its firmware updater is compatible only with PowerA Xbox Series X|S controllers. A separate one-time calibration firmware update for PowerA Enhanced Wired Xbox Controllers uses the Compatibility Updater Tool on Windows 10 or 11; PowerA says the tool does not work on Mac. PowerA Gamer HQ App FAQ. |
| 8BitDo | 8BitDo Firmware Updater; its support catalog also provides model-specific firmware and instructions. | The Upgrade Tool page lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.13 or later. Its automatic recognition and download features require an internet connection; advanced mode supports manual updating. Connection and update-mode instructions vary by model. 8BitDo Upgrade Tool and 8BitDo Support. |
| GameSir | GameSir Nexus for models listed as compatible. | GameSir lists Nexus for PC and Xbox through the Microsoft Store. Check its compatible-model list; support is not established for every GameSir controller. GameSir Nexus. |
| SCUF Valor | Valor Companion app; SCUF describes a separate updater tool for Valor Wired beta firmware. | The cited guide says the Companion app is available on PC and Xbox. For the specific V0.563 beta update covered by the guide, joystick calibration is required before normal joystick use. This warning is specific to that model and beta firmware. SCUF Valor guide. |
| 8BitDo Arcade Controller for Xbox | Ultimate Software X on an Xbox console. | The model’s support page specifies a console-based update route, so a PC-only option is not established for it. 8BitDo Support. |
Update the firmware using the model’s instructions
- Open the official support page. Navigate to the manufacturer’s support or downloads area, select the exact model, and confirm the updater and operating system requirements.
- Install or open the specified updater. Use the manufacturer’s official app or utility. Do not assume Microsoft’s Xbox Accessories app supports your third-party controller; the available Xbox Support material does not establish that it updates every such model.
- Connect the controller as directed. If the instructions require USB, use a cable that fits the controller’s port and supports data, not just charging. Follow the exact model’s instructions for entering update mode; do not reuse another model’s button combination.
- Run the update and wait for confirmation. If the updater offers automatic recognition or a manual firmware-file option, use only the option and file specified for your model. Keep the controller connected until the tool reports completion.
- Complete any required restart or calibration. Follow the manufacturer’s post-update steps before testing the controller.
If the updater does not work
- The controller is not detected: Recheck the model-specific connection and update-mode instructions. If USB is required, check that the cable supports data and that the controller is connected as specified.
- The app or utility will not run: Confirm your operating system meets the requirement for that exact tool. For example, PowerA’s Compatibility Updater Tool is for Windows 10 or 11, while 8BitDo lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.13 or later for its Upgrade Tool.
- The model is not listed: Do not try firmware for a similar-looking controller. Ask the manufacturer whether that model has a firmware update route.
- Controls behave unexpectedly after updating: Check the model’s release or update instructions for a required restart or calibration. SCUF’s cited Valor Wired beta guide, for instance, requires joystick calibration after its specified update.
Do not download unofficial firmware or apply another model’s instructions. Support depends on the exact controller, and some models may require an Xbox console for updates.
