Apple documents ways to launch Live Recognition using accessibility shortcuts, but its iOS 27 Lock Screen guide does not list Live Recognition as a direct Lock Screen control. That does not prove the control is unavailable on every iPhone or iOS 27 configuration; the cited documentation does not settle whether a dedicated Lock Screen control can be added. Try the seven documented access routes below, and distinguish an actual failure to launch from the expected result when VoiceOver is off.
Can you launch Live Recognition directly from the iPhone Lock Screen in iOS 27?
Apple’s iOS 27 guide to Lock Screen features covers quick access to features such as Camera, Control Center, notifications, widgets, and media playback, but it does not name Live Recognition as a direct Lock Screen control. Apple’s documentation therefore does not confirm that you can add a dedicated Live Recognition control there, nor does it establish that no device or build can offer one.

Apple does document several ways to open Live Recognition through accessibility shortcuts. If you cannot launch it from the Lock Screen, use one of those routes instead of assuming that a missing Lock Screen control means the feature itself is broken.
Seven ways to open Live Recognition
1. Use the VoiceOver gesture
When VoiceOver is on, triple-tap the screen with four fingers to start Live Recognition. Apple describes this gesture in its iOS 27 VoiceOver guide. It is a gesture-based route, not a control that Apple’s cited guide says can be placed on the Lock Screen.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
2. Assign it to Accessibility Shortcut
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut.
- Select Live Recognition.
- Triple-click the side button, or the Home button on an iPhone that has one, to invoke the shortcut.
Apple lists the triple-click shortcut as a way to start Live Recognition. If several options are assigned to the shortcut, the button action may present a selection menu rather than immediately opening one feature.
3. Configure Back Tap
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap.
- Choose Double Tap or Triple Tap.
- Choose Live Recognition for that gesture.
Use the configured tap on the back of the iPhone to invoke it. The available assignment is documented in Apple’s Live Recognition shortcut guide.

4. Assign the Action button, if your model has one
On supported iPhone models, customize the Action button to start Live Recognition. Apple identifies the Action button as a shortcut option, but it is not available on every iPhone. The cited guide does not provide a model-by-model list here, so check whether your device offers the button and Live Recognition as an assignment.

Apple says that when VoiceOver is off, the shortcut opens Magnifier in Detection Mode. That is documented behavior, not necessarily a failed response. If you expected the VoiceOver-enabled Live Recognition experience, turn VoiceOver on and use the four-finger gesture, or use another configured shortcut.

6. Open Live Recognition settings directly
To check the feature’s settings, go to Settings > Accessibility > Live Recognition. Apple’s VoiceOver guide says this is where you can customize options such as the default question and input mode. Changing these settings is separate from adding a Lock Screen launch control.
7. Review general Lock Screen access settings
- Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode, or Settings > Touch ID & Passcode on a Home-button model.
- Enter your passcode if prompted.
- Review the options under Allow Access When Locked.
Apple’s Lock Screen access guide describes these as general controls for access while the phone is locked. It does not say that a specific Live Recognition switch is located there, so do not treat this menu as a guaranteed way to add one.

Choose a launch route that fits your setup
| Route | What it requires | Documented action |
|---|---|---|
| VoiceOver gesture | VoiceOver enabled | Triple-tap with four fingers |
| Accessibility Shortcut | Live Recognition selected in the shortcut settings; a side or Home button | Triple-click the button |
| Back Tap | A configured Double Tap or Triple Tap action | Tap the back of the iPhone using the assigned gesture |
| Action button | A supported iPhone model and a Live Recognition assignment | Press the Action button |
Apple’s cited documentation does not compare the reliability of these routes. Pick one that is available on your device and practical to use; none of these documented alternatives confirms that a dedicated Lock Screen control can be added.
