A Blu-ray Disc is an optical disc format used to distribute and record high-definition video and to store data. It is read with a blue laser, and a standard disc holds 25GB on one layer or 50GB on two layers, according to the Blu-ray Disc Association’s overview (page accessed October 7, 2026; publication date not stated).

What is a Blu-ray Disc?

Blu-ray Disc is the format’s proper name; “Blu-ray disc” is a generic way to refer to a disc in that format. Like a DVD or CD, it stores information optically, with a laser reading data encoded on the disc. Its uses include high-definition video, recording, and data storage. The Blu-ray Disc Association describes the format and its capacities in its overview.

Why is it called Blu-ray?

The name refers to the blue laser beam used to read the disc. The Blu-ray Disc Association explains that this distinguishes it from the red laser used for DVDs and CDs in its FAQ. The format name is written “Blu-ray,” not “Blue Ray.”

How does Blu-ray differ from DVD?

The principal differences are storage capacity and the optical system used to read the discs. The Association lists DVD capacity as 4.7GB and standard Blu-ray capacity as 25GB for a single-layer disc or 50GB for a dual-layer disc. These are storage capacities, not a guaranteed movie duration; video length depends on how the content is encoded.

  • Upscale your DVDs to near HD quality

Blu-ray’s blue laser and lens specifications allow a smaller focused beam than DVD’s red-laser system. That makes it possible to record smaller, more closely packed pits on the disc and store more data. The Association explains the distinction in its format comparison FAQ.

Is Blu-ray the same as 4K?

No. Standard Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray are related but distinct formats. The Blu-ray Disc Association says Ultra HD Blu-ray supports resolutions up to 3840 × 2160 and HDR; those specifications should not be assumed for every Blu-ray disc. See the Association’s comparison of DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray for the format distinctions.

Do not assume universal compatibility across Blu-ray variants. Check the player’s supported disc formats against the exact format printed on the disc or its packaging, especially when distinguishing standard Blu-ray from Ultra HD Blu-ray.

When was Blu-ray introduced?

Sony’s February 19, 2002 announcement said that nine companies had jointly established Blu-ray Disc’s basic specifications. The announcement called it a “next generation large capacity optical disc video recording format” and described the launch-era system as using a blue-violet laser. This is historical context, not a complete statement of current specifications. Read the dated Sony announcement.
