If Windows 11 signs in but leaves you with a black screen, first check the monitor and display connections, reset the graphics driver, and cycle the display-output mode. If a cursor is visible, try restarting Windows Explorer in Task Manager. These low-impact checks may restore the desktop without changing files or recovery settings.

Identify what kind of black screen you have

The right troubleshooting path depends on what appears on screen. A blank screen at login can be related to a display-output setting or a corrupted user profile. A blank screen with a cursor may involve a stalled Windows process or a driver. A blank screen after an update can be associated with an incompatible driver or an incomplete update. These are possibilities, not diagnoses.

  • Black screen after login: Windows reaches sign-in, but the desktop does not appear.
  • Blank screen with a cursor: The pointer is visible against an otherwise blank screen.
  • Blank screen after an update: The problem began after a Windows or driver update.

A screen showing an error message or stop code is a different problem from a blank screen. A blinking cursor can indicate that UEFI/BIOS cannot find a boot device, so it also needs a different troubleshooting path.

Try display and connection checks first

Check the monitor, power, and cables

Make sure the PC is powered on. If you use an external monitor, confirm it is powered on, connected, and set to the correct input. Check that the display cable is firmly connected. If possible, test with another cable or monitor to help rule out a hardware or connection problem; this is a diagnostic check, not a fix for every Windows sign-in issue. Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting guide recommends trying another display or cable.

Reset the graphics driver

Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. A beep or a brief screen flicker may indicate that Windows reset the graphics driver. Wait a moment to see whether the desktop returns.

Cycle the display-output mode

Windows may be sending the desktop to a different display. Press Windows + P, press P again, then press Enter to cycle through display modes such as PC screen only, duplicate, or extend. Pause briefly after each change to see whether the screen returns.

If a cursor is visible, restart Windows Explorer

When the screen is blank but the cursor appears, Windows may be running without its desktop shell. Try restarting Explorer:

Start Windows in Safe Mode

Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of files, drivers, and services. If the black screen does not occur there, that helps narrow the cause: Microsoft says default settings and basic device drivers can then be ruled out as possible causes. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting aid, not proof of a specific fault.

From the sign-in screen

  1. At the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
  2. In WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  3. After the PC restarts, press 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.

If you cannot reach the sign-in screen

Microsoft’s blank-screen guide describes reaching WinRE by forcing the PC to shut down and repeating the process until the recovery screen appears. Then select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, and press F5 for Safe Mode with Networking. Follow Microsoft’s current recovery instructions for the device if this route does not bring up WinRE.

Check the display driver in Safe Mode

If the problem began just after a display-driver update, rolling back that driver is a sensible next step. Otherwise, Microsoft lists updating or uninstalling the display driver as troubleshooting options. These changes may require an administrator account.

  3. On the Driver tab, choose Roll Back Driver if the issue began after a driver update and that option is available. Otherwise, consider updating or uninstalling the driver.
  4. Restart Windows normally and check whether the desktop appears.

If you need a driver, use Windows Update or the computer or display-adapter manufacturer’s support channel. Do not install drivers from unverified download sites. Microsoft’s blank-screen guide covers display-driver troubleshooting.

Use System Restore only if the problem began recently

If the black screen started recently and the earlier checks did not help, Microsoft lists System Restore from Safe Mode or Recovery Mode as an option. Choose a restore point from before the problem began, if one is available. Recovery options can have different effects, and some may result in data loss. Back up important files before proceeding and choose the least disruptive option that fits the problem. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options for details.

When this is not a blank-screen-after-login problem

An error message or stop code appears

Do not treat an error message or stop code as an ordinary blank screen. Follow Microsoft’s guidance for unexpected restarts and stop-code errors.

The PC shows a blinking cursor

A blinking cursor can mean UEFI/BIOS cannot find a boot device. That is a boot problem rather than the cursor-visible blank desktop described above.

The device is a Surface

For a Surface device, use Microsoft’s Surface startup troubleshooting rather than assuming that general PC steps cover every device-specific recovery case.
