You can combine YOLOv8 object detection and optical character recognition (OCR) to build a medication-tracking prototype that finds a pill or package region in an image and extracts visible package text. Those outputs are only drafts: they do not establish a medication’s identity, dose, authenticity, safety, or clinical accuracy. The prototype should require a person to review and confirm every field before saving.
What the prototype does—and does not do
The workflow has separate visual and text stages. A detector can locate a region of interest; OCR can recognize characters in an image. Neither stage independently verifies what a medicine is or whether a label’s instructions are correct.
- Detection: identifies where a target object or region appears in an image.
- OCR: returns text it recognizes from an image, such as text printed on a package.
- Human review: checks the proposed information against the physical package or another appropriate source before it becomes a saved record.
Keep the product framed as a tool for organizing information supplied or confirmed by the user. Do not present a detected pill, extracted text, or saved record as a diagnosis, prescription verification, or recommendation about taking medication.

Build the workflow as a sequence of reviewable steps
- Capture an image. Let the user photograph a medication package or pill with a mobile device. For package text, guide them to include the full relevant label and avoid blur, glare, and obstructing fingers. A camera-equipped Android phone is one reasonable way to capture images and try an Android OCR workflow; the cited documentation does not establish a required phone model or accessory.
- Locate the relevant region. Run an object detector to find the pill or package area you want to inspect. Ultralytics documents a medical-pills detection dataset and example training and prediction workflows, making it a possible starting point for an educational demo. That documentation is not evidence that a model can safely identify medicines in arbitrary photographs.
- Recognize package text. Send a suitable package image or cropped region to OCR. In an Android app, Google’s ML Kit TextRecognizer API processes an image input and returns a text-recognition result. Treat the result as candidate text, not as a verified prescription or dosage.
- Show a draft for correction. Present recognized fields—such as the text the user wants to record—in an editable review screen. Make it clear which values came from OCR and require the user to correct or confirm them before saving. Do not silently turn an uncertain recognition into a medication instruction.
- Save only what the user approves. Store the confirmed record with the minimum information the app needs. Decide explicitly whether the original camera image is retained, for how long, and how the user can delete it.
Train and assess detection for the images you expect
The Ultralytics medical-pills detection dataset documentation describes a single-class detection dataset and demonstrates calls to model.train(...) and model.predict(...). That makes it useful for learning the mechanics of training and prediction, but a single-class detector’s output is a located object—not a drug name, active ingredient, strength, or safety judgment.

Before relying on a detector even for a polished prototype, consider whether its training and evaluation images resemble the situations users will encounter. A model that sees clean, centered examples may behave differently with rotated objects, shadows, cluttered backgrounds, partial views, or packaging it has not encountered. Build a representative evaluation set, inspect misses and false detections, and keep the interface honest about uncertainty. The cited dataset documentation does not establish real-world identification accuracy.
Use OCR as a draft, not as a source of truth
Google’s Android TextRecognizer reference describes creating an image input, processing it, and closing the recognizer when finished. The Android API reference identifies Latin-based text recognition. Google’s broader ML Kit documentation describes support for Latin, Chinese, Devanagari, Japanese, and Korean scripts; confirm that the platform and API version you choose support the scripts relevant to your app.

OCR may return text without establishing which label it came from, whether a character was read correctly, or whether a printed instruction applies to the user. Keep the image or a clear review context available while the person checks extracted text. Design for corrections rather than assuming OCR output is accurate.

Google says ML Kit input processing and results occur on-device and are not sent to Google servers. Its Terms & Privacy page, last modified May 14, 2025, also says ML Kit may contact Google servers for bug fixes, model updates, and hardware compatibility information, and that it sends performance and utilization metrics. “On-device” describes the handling of ML Kit input data and results; it does not mean your app has no network activity or no privacy obligations.

Set an app-level policy for camera images and medication records: collect only what the feature needs, explain what is retained, protect stored data, and provide a clear deletion path. If you later add a cloud service, assess that data flow separately; the cited ML Kit documentation does not evaluate alternative cloud OCR pipelines.

Intended use and FDA policy
The FDA’s September 2022 guidance on device software functions and mobile medical applications describes a function- and risk-focused approach. The agency says it intends to focus oversight on software functions that meet the device definition and could pose a patient-safety risk if they do not work as intended. Its policy navigator includes simple prompting for predetermined medication schedules as an example in its discussion. That example is not a blanket exemption for every medication app. Reassess the app’s intended use and each function against current FDA guidance before launch; do not infer regulatory status from the word “tracker.”

Ultralytics’ official documentation and licensing overview lists AGPL-3.0 and Enterprise licensing options. Commercial builders should review the current terms for their exact use and deployment rather than assuming that a tutorial workflow determines which license applies.
