A content delivery network (CDN), also called a content distribution network, is a geographically distributed network of servers that delivers web and media content from locations closer to users. It commonly caches eligible content at edge locations, which can reduce delivery distance and repeated work at the origin server.

How does a CDN work?

A CDN works between a website or application’s original content and the person requesting it. For example, a site may store its original image files at an origin server. When a visitor requests an image, a nearby CDN edge location can return a cached copy. If that copy is not available, the CDN follows its delivery rules to obtain the content, commonly from the origin.

Origin

The origin is the server or storage location that holds the original content. Akamai describes it as the source of truth.

Edge locations and caching

Edge locations are servers distributed across regions. A CDN can temporarily store copies of eligible content there. When a request can be answered with a cached copy, the edge serves it; this can reduce how often the origin must provide the same content.

Dynamic content

Not every request can be handled as a reusable file. Content that is dynamic or specific to an individual user needs different handling, determined by the CDN service and its configuration. Google Cloud lists dynamic, user-specific content among Cloud CDN use cases.

What content can a CDN deliver?

CDNs can deliver website assets such as HTML, JavaScript, stylesheets and images, as well as software downloads, video and streaming media. They can support websites, applications and media services; the technology is not limited to images.

What are the benefits and limits of a CDN?

Serving eligible content closer to users can reduce latency, while caching can reduce repeated requests to an origin and help manage bandwidth. CDNs may also support availability during traffic spikes or some infrastructure failures, and providers describe security capabilities such as help handling some denial-of-service traffic.

These are potential capabilities, not guaranteed outcomes. Performance and savings depend on user geography, whether content is cacheable, routing, configuration and workload. A CDN does not by itself establish a particular speed improvement, cost reduction, uptime level or degree of attack protection.

Examples of CDN services

Cloudflare CDN, Amazon CloudFront and Google Cloud CDN are examples of provider services. Particular architectures differ: for instance, Google documents Cloud CDN with external Application Load Balancers and identifies Cloud Storage as an origin option for a backend bucket. That setup is not a universal requirement for using a CDN.

What should you consider when choosing a CDN?

Start with where your users are and what you deliver. A useful evaluation considers audience geography, the mix of static and dynamic content, cacheability, origin integration, cache controls, security needs, support and total cost. The cited provider descriptions establish examples of available services, but do not provide an independent, like-for-like comparison of current prices or measured performance. Choosing among providers therefore requires evidence based on the workload you need to serve.
