Windows 11 may be changing your default printer because Let Windows manage my default printer is turned on. When enabled, Windows selects the last printer you used. Turn the setting off, then set your preferred installed printer as the default.
Why Windows changes the default printer
The behavior is intentional when automatic printer management is enabled: Windows chooses “the last printer you used” as the default. On a mobile Windows device, changing location can also lead Windows to select the last printer used at the new location. Microsoft describes this location-related behavior for mobile devices; it should not be assumed to apply to every desktop PC.
Microsoft documents this setting and behavior in its instructions for setting a default printer in Windows, which cover Windows 11 and Windows 10.
How to stop Windows 11 from changing your default printer
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Under Printer preferences, turn off Let Windows manage my default printer.
- Select the printer you want to use and choose Set as default. Its status should change to Default.
If “Set as default” is missing
Check whether Let Windows manage my default printer is still on. Microsoft identifies automatic printer management as a reason the Set as default control may not appear. Turn the setting off, then select the intended printer again.

If your preferred printer is not listed
The printer must appear among the installed printers before you can select it as the default. If it is absent, use Microsoft’s separate guidance for adding or installing a printer, then return to Printers & scanners to set it as default.
