If your Samsung freezer is not making ice, start by checking that the freezer door seals, ice production is turned on, and the ice bucket is seated correctly. Then check the water supply and filter before using the reset procedure for your specific ice-maker location. Samsung says ice should begin returning within three hours after troubleshooting, although normal production can take up to 24 hours to recover.
Samsung refrigerators vary: controls, bucket removal, and reset steps depend on the model and where the ice maker sits. Use your refrigerator’s manual or Samsung Support to confirm the instructions for your exact model.
Start with the checks that can stop ice production
Confirm the door closes and the ice maker is on
A freezer-door ice maker needs the door to seal properly; if it is too warm, it may not make ice. Close the door and check for an Ice Off indicator or other model-specific ice-maker control. Depending on the refrigerator, you may find the setting on the control panel, in Fridge Manager on a Family Hub model, or in SmartThings. Dual-ice-maker models may have separate controls.
Check for frost that prevents the door from sealing. Do not assume every Samsung model uses the same control label or menu path.

Check the bucket
Make sure the ice bucket is fully in place and contains only ice. A bucket that is missing or incorrectly seated can interfere with ice-making or dispensing; other items in the bucket can make the ice maker register as full. Follow the manual for your model when removing or reinstalling the bucket.
Check the water supply if the maker does not fill
If the ice-maker test cycles but the tray does not receive water, check that the household water valve is fully open and the water line is connected, unkinked, and not pinched. If the line was recently adjusted, low pressure may be part of the problem.
For applicable dispenser-equipped models, Samsung’s flow check is at least 6 ounces (three-quarters of a cup) in less than 10 seconds. Samsung also identifies 20 psi as a minimum in relevant troubleshooting situations; this is not a universal diagnosis for every refrigerator. A reverse-osmosis system can leave pressure too low. Samsung recommends getting help from a plumber to increase pressure when needed.

Consider whether the water filter is restricting flow
On models with a water filter, an expired filter can reduce water pressure enough to affect ice production or cube size. Samsung rates its filters for 300 gallons, which it describes as about six months of average household use, and recommends changing them every six months.
Samsung lists HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1 filter families. These are not universal fits: check the model number on your installed filter or the refrigerator manual before buying a replacement. If the filter is due for replacement or flow improves when the filter is removed, use a model-matched filter and follow the manual’s instructions.
Reset the ice maker only with the matching instructions
Samsung’s freezer-door reset procedure applies to the freezer-door ice maker covered by its instructions. Ice makers in other locations may require a different procedure, so confirm your model and maker location in the manual before trying a reset.

- Remove the ice bucket as directed in your refrigerator manual.
- Find the ice maker’s Test button and hold it until you hear a chime. If there is no chime but the ice maker moves, Samsung considers it reset.
- If there is no chime and no movement, disconnect power or switch off the refrigerator’s breaker for two minutes, restore power, and retry the test.
- Reinstall the bucket until it clicks into place.
Samsung warns: “Do not press Test repeatedly after the ice tray is filled with ice or water. The water may overflow or the ice may jam.”

After troubleshooting, Samsung says ice should begin to return within three hours, but normal amounts can take up to 24 hours. During recovery, dispense ice occasionally so it does not pile up at one end of the bucket and make the maker register as full.
Samsung’s typical production figures vary by ice-maker location: a refrigerator-compartment maker produces one tray every 45–65 minutes, while a freezer-compartment maker produces one tray every 85 minutes. Samsung defines a tray as eight cubes for a full-size refrigerator and six cubes for a counter-depth refrigerator. These are location-specific figures, not a single rate for all models.

Match other symptoms to likely causes
| Symptom | What it can indicate | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No ice at all | The maker may be off, the door may not seal, the bucket may be out of position, or water may not be reaching the maker. | Check the door, control, bucket, water valve and line; then follow the correct model-specific test and allow time for recovery. |
| Small cubes | Low water pressure can reduce cube size. | Check the valve, line, and filter. Use Samsung’s flow and pressure checks only where they apply to your model. |
| Cloudy white ice | Samsung says this can be normal: rapid freezing can trap small amounts of minerals and gases. | If there are no other concerning symptoms, cloudiness alone does not necessarily mean the maker is faulty. |
| Dark flecks or particles | Dirty ice is not normal. Possible causes include an expired or damaged filter, a dirty water supply, or a damaged bucket. | Check the filter and bucket. Contact Samsung support if contamination persists or the bucket is visibly damaged. |
| Clumped or slushy ice | Clumps can block dispensing or make the maker think the bucket is full; slushy or frosty cubes can be associated with frost in the bucket. | Check the bucket and clear only what the manual permits. Do not force out a stuck bucket. |
Know when to stop troubleshooting
Do not repeatedly run the test after the tray fills, force out a stuck bucket, or manually defrost the ice maker. Samsung says its ice maker has an automatic defrost function and warns that attempting to defrost it may cause damage; if it is not working, service is needed.
Request Samsung support or service if no ice returns after three hours, the maker does not respond to the correctly performed test, an error code appears, or the unit is frozen over or visibly damaged. Have the refrigerator’s model information ready so support can provide the instructions and service options for that specific appliance.
