Four products in this comparison have documented free options: Snipe-IT and GLPI offer free software paths, while ManageEngine AssetExplorer and Lansweeper have capped free editions or tiers. None is automatically a fit for a large enterprise: the limits, deployment model, discovery needs, and operational responsibilities matter more than the word “free.” The available evidence does not support a responsible ten-product ranking, so this guide compares the four verified options rather than padding the list with trials or unverified plans.
At a glance: what each free option provides
| Product | What is free | Documented limit or qualification | Best fit to investigate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snipe-IT | Vendor-described free, open-source self-hosted software | No asset cap is stated on the cited page. Hosting and support are offered separately; the page does not quantify the cost of operating a self-hosted installation. | Organizations able to host and maintain the software that want to manage asset custody and lifecycle records. |
| GLPI | Free software package | Managed cloud, support, plugins, and GLPI Network offers are separate from the free software. No free-tier asset cap is stated on the cited pricing page. | Teams considering a self-managed software deployment and able to assess separately whether paid hosting or services are needed. |
| ManageEngine AssetExplorer | Perpetual free edition | The vendor lists 25 nodes for on-premises and 50 nodes for cloud; its download page also states 25 nodes. The cloud trial is a separate 30-day offer for up to 250 IT assets, after which it downgrades to the free edition if no paid license is applied. | Teams that can work within the edition’s node cap and want to compare cloud with on-premises deployment. |
| Lansweeper | Free continuation tier | Up to 100 assets and unlimited user seats, with community support. The custom-priced Enterprise plan starts at 10,000 assets. | Organizations evaluating discovery and inventory at limited scale before deciding whether a paid tier is warranted. |
These terms are from the vendors’ pages checked in October 2026. Vendors use different counting units: a “node” is not necessarily equivalent to an “asset” across products, so do not compare the caps as if they were measured identically.
How to choose among the four
Choose Snipe-IT if you can own the installation
Snipe-IT’s free path is self-hosted software, not a promise of free managed hosting. That makes it worth evaluating when your team can take responsibility for infrastructure and ongoing operations and needs to track custody and lifecycle. The cited vendor page offers hosting and support separately, but does not establish what a self-hosted deployment will cost an organization to run.
Before adopting it for a broad enterprise estate, establish who will handle installation, upgrades, backups, availability, and security. Those responsibilities do not disappear because the software license is free.
#1 Best Overall
Choose GLPI if you want the free software path and can separate it from paid services
GLPI’s free software package should not be confused with its managed cloud or GLPI Network offers. Compare the effort and control of running the software yourself against the hosted, support, plugin, or network services you may need; the pricing page distinguishes those offerings.
The same page lists a GLPI Network Cloud offer at €19 per user per month, excluding tax, among its 2026 rates. That is a paid hosted offer, not the price of the free software package. Confirm current terms directly with the vendor before budgeting.
Choose AssetExplorer only if its node cap matches your deployment
AssetExplorer has a perpetual free edition, but the published limits are small for many enterprise-wide deployments: 25 nodes for on-premises and 50 nodes for cloud on the product page. The download page also gives a 25-node figure, so check the current edition and deployment terms during evaluation rather than assuming the limits are interchangeable.
The 30-day cloud trial for up to 250 IT assets is not a permanent free plan. The vendor says it downgrades to the free edition if no paid license is applied. Paid plans are asset-based, so estimate the inventory you actually intend to manage before moving beyond the free edition.
Choose Lansweeper if a 100-asset discovery tier is enough to evaluate
Lansweeper’s free continuation tier covers up to 100 assets, allows unlimited user seats, and includes community support. That combination may suit a limited inventory or an initial evaluation, but the asset cap is likely to disqualify a larger production estate. The vendor’s custom-priced Enterprise plan starts at 10,000 assets, which gives a useful scale threshold to discuss with sales, not a quoted price.
What “enterprise-ready” needs to mean in practice
A free license or unlimited-seat label does not establish that a platform meets enterprise requirements. Before selecting one, map the actual estate and operating controls your organization requires.
Rank #4
- Capacity and counting: Count the devices and other configuration items you need to manage, then confirm how the vendor defines an asset or node and how it treats additions or removals.
- Discovery coverage: Establish whether records will be maintained manually or populated through discovery, and whether discovery reaches the systems and network segments you care about.
- Security and governance: Verify role-based access, audit needs, data location, and any security controls required by your organization.
- Workflow and integrations: Check whether the product supports the service-desk workflows, integrations, and functions you need. Asset records alone do not establish software-license compliance, contract or procurement management, or a complete CMDB capability.
- Operations and support: For self-hosted software, assign responsibility for upgrades, backups, availability, and security. For hosted or capped products, confirm support commitments and the terms that apply after exceeding a limit.
- Physical identification: If your workflow uses barcode or QR scanning, verify label material, adhesive, dimensions, and printer compatibility before buying asset tags.
Why this is a four-product shortlist, not a ten-product ranking
The documented options support a useful comparison of four free paths, but not ten ranked entries. A trial is not a permanent free edition, and a product that happens to contain asset records is not necessarily a comparable IT asset-management system. Adding products without verified current free terms would make the list less useful, not more complete. Recheck vendor pages before committing: plan availability, limits, and pricing can change.
