Portmaster can replace Pi-hole for someone who wants to monitor and control connections on a computer where Portmaster is installed. It is not a supported drop-in replacement for Pi-hole’s network-wide DNS filtering. The distinction is scope: Portmaster provides on-device, per-application controls; Pi-hole can filter DNS requests from multiple devices configured to use it.
A How-To Geek writer described Portmaster as easier for their needs, but that is an individual experience, not a controlled usability comparison. Which tool fits better depends on whether you want control on one computer or DNS-level filtering across a network.
What is Portmaster, and why consider it?
Portmaster is Safing software that monitors network connections on the computer where it runs and lets users control them. How-To Geek writer Dibakar Ghosh called it “an on-device application firewall” in an article published September 23, 2026. That description captures the key difference from a network-level DNS filter: Portmaster’s controls are installed on and applied to a supported computer.

Its interface provides visibility into connections, and its controls include rules for blocking an application’s internet access or allowing exceptions. Safing also documents filters for DNS queries and network connections. These options can make Portmaster a practical choice if you want to see which applications connect from your computer and decide what they may access.

When Portmaster is the better fit
- You primarily want connection visibility and blocking on your own Windows or Linux computer.
- You want to make rules for particular applications, including blocking an application’s internet access or allowing an exception.
- You prefer installing software on the device you want to manage rather than changing DNS settings for an entire network.

When Pi-hole remains the better fit
- You want DNS-level filtering for several devices across a home network.
- You need coverage for smart devices or other clients that cannot install Portmaster.
- You want network-level DNS management rather than rules attached to individual applications on one computer.
Portmaster has DNS configuration options, but those options do not make it an officially supported network-wide replacement. Safing’s Settings Handbook says that using Portmaster as a network-wide privacy system similar to Pi-hole “exists mainly for testing and is not officially supported.” Safing: Settings Handbook

DNS settings and practical caveats
Changing DNS can affect local services
Portmaster can use encrypted DNS configurations, and Safing documents DNS-over-TLS examples and AdGuard DNS options. Safing warns that ignoring DNS servers supplied by the system or network may break local-network domains. If you rely on names for local devices or services, check whether they still resolve after changing DNS settings. Safing: DNS Configuration

Network integration behavior
Safing says Portmaster does not make permanent changes to network configuration and removes its volatile network integration when stopped or uninstalled. On Linux, its documented integration uses iptables and may conflict with other software that uses the same packet-marking mechanisms. This matters most if you already run Linux networking or firewall tools that use those mechanisms. Safing: Frequently Asked Questions
How to choose
- Decide what you need to cover. If the goal is one computer, Portmaster’s on-device model may be enough. If the goal is multiple network clients, Pi-hole’s network DNS role is the closer match.
- Check whether each target device can run Portmaster. Safing documents Windows and Linux installation, with Windows limited to 64-bit CPU architecture. Devices that cannot run it will not gain per-device Portmaster controls from an installation on another computer.
- Choose the control you actually want. For per-application connection rules on a computer, use Portmaster’s documented rules. For DNS filtering shared across clients, use a network DNS approach rather than relying on Portmaster’s unsupported network-wide testing mode.
- Review DNS dependencies before changing settings. If local-network domains matter, account for Safing’s warning that ignoring system or network DNS servers may break their resolution.
Verdict
Portmaster is a credible Pi-hole alternative only for a narrower job: monitoring and controlling network connections on a supported computer. It offers application-level controls and DNS options, but Safing does not officially support using it as a network-wide Pi-hole-style privacy system. Choose it for control on the device itself; keep a network-level DNS solution in view when you want filtering for the household’s devices.
