Backlinks still matter for SEO in 2026, but they are not the whole story. Google says links help it find pages and assess relevance, and that PageRank uses links; it also describes Search as relying on many signals and systems. Meanwhile, “brand signals” and “entity authority” are useful strategic concepts—not standalone Google ranking factors confirmed by the documentation covered here. A recognizable, consistently described brand can help people discover, trust, cite, and return to a site, but that is different from proving that an unlinked mention earns a direct ranking boost.
Do backlinks still matter in 2026?
Yes. Google Search Central says, “Google uses links as a signal when determining the relevancy of pages and to find new pages to crawl.” Its SEO Starter Guide also says, “PageRank is one of our fundamental algorithms, and it uses links.” These statements establish that links remain part of Google Search; they do not say how much any specific link affects a page or guarantee that a backlink will improve rankings.
A link can help search engines discover a destination and provide context about its relationship to the linking page. It can also bring people directly to useful material. The practical goal is not to accumulate links indiscriminately, but to make resources worth referencing and ensure links are clear, crawlable, and relevant.

The Google documentation discussed here does not identify unlinked brand mentions as a standalone ranking factor, nor does it establish a direct ranking reward for them. A mention may still have practical value: people can learn a name, visit a site, discuss its work, or decide to cite it with a link. Those are plausible audience and discovery effects, not proof of an undocumented algorithmic boost.
#1 Best Overall
Keep the distinction clear: a linked citation is a link, which Google says can serve as a relevance and discovery signal. An unlinked mention may build recognition or lead to later visits and citations, but the sources here do not establish that Google treats the mention itself as a ranking signal.
What does “entity authority” mean in SEO?
In SEO discussions, “entity authority” generally describes how clearly and consistently an organization, person, or publication is identified and associated with a subject. It is an industry concept, not a named Google ranking metric confirmed by the documentation covered here. Google describes ranking systems that operate at page level, alongside site-wide signals and classifiers; that supports a multifactor picture, not a single brand-authority score that controls rankings.
Rank #2
For a site, entity clarity is a communications and discoverability objective: use a consistent organization name, explain what the site covers, identify authors where relevant, and make public profiles accurate. These steps can help readers understand who is behind a page. They should not be presented as a guaranteed ranking lever.

How do links, brand clarity, and content work together?
These are complementary workstreams, not competing SEO strategies. Link earning has direct support in Google’s published description of links. Brand and entity clarity is a sensible way to help people recognize and understand a site, with possible indirect benefits for visits and citations. Neither should replace useful content or sound technical linking practices.
Rank #3
| Workstream | What it can do | Evidence boundary | What to focus on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Link earning | Support discovery and relevance, and connect readers and crawlers with useful resources. | Google documents links as a signal but does not quantify the weight of a particular link. | Editorial relevance, source quality, natural context, crawlability, and whether the link is earned or paid. |
| Brand and entity clarity | Help audiences recognize an organization and understand its work; it may support referral discovery and future citations. | This is a strategic inference from Google’s guidance on people-first content and site promotion. The sources do not confirm unlinked mentions as a standalone ranking factor. | Consistent naming, accurate profiles, author and organization context, topical coherence, and whether real readers recognize and cite the entity. |
How to build authority beyond link building
Publish something worth citing
Create useful original resources, reporting, tools, or expert material that another site has a real reason to reference. This aligns with Google’s guidance on links as a discovery and relevance signal without treating link volume as the goal.
Make the site and its authors easy to understand
Use a consistent organization name and describe the site’s focus plainly. Give authors appropriate context, and keep public profiles accurate. This supports reader understanding; it is not evidence of a standalone ranking boost.
Write for people, using language they recognize
Google recommends useful, people-first content. Put the words readers use in prominent places such as page titles and headings, and use descriptive text for links. Make claims clear and provide relevant sourcing and detail rather than relying on vague assertions of expertise.

Best Value
Keep links usable and transparent
Use crawlable links with descriptive anchor text, and make sure each important page has at least one internal link pointing to it. Qualify paid links with sponsored or nofollow as appropriate, following Google’s link guidance.
Measure search performance
Use Google Search Console to monitor search performance and identify opportunities to improve the site. Treat performance data as a way to assess actual outcomes, not as proof that a particular brand tactic caused a ranking change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does E-E-A-T directly determine rankings?
Google says, “E-E-A-T itself isn’t a specific ranking factor.” Its systems use a mix of factors to identify content that demonstrates aspects of experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness. Quality-rater data is not directly used in ranking algorithms. In practical terms, E-E-A-T is a framework for thinking about qualities readers need and Google’s systems seek to recognize—not a score to add to a page or a substitute for good content.

What should SEO teams conclude for 2026?
Do not treat backlinks as obsolete, and do not assume that brand mentions or an “entity authority” score have a confirmed direct effect on Google rankings. Build pages people find useful, earn relevant citations, make the organization and authors clear, promote work in appropriate communities, and monitor search performance. Google’s published guidance supports links, useful content, and sound discovery practices; the direct ranking effect of unlinked mentions is not established by the sources cited here.
The guidance cited in this article is from Google Search Central documentation reviewed in October 2026; pages that expose an update date were most recently updated on December 10, 2025. It describes Google’s published guidance, not a measurement of every search outcome in 2026 or the algorithms of other search engines.
