You do not need a VPN to use Kodi, and Kodi does not recommend one for its intended operation. If you choose to use a VPN, configure it on the device or network that runs Kodi—not as a Kodi add-on. Connect the VPN first, then open Kodi. The exact setup depends on your device, operating system, and VPN provider.
Does Kodi need a VPN?
No. Kodi is media-player software, and its official policy says it does not need a VPN to operate as designed. A VPN is an independent choice, not a Kodi requirement. It may be useful for a lawful privacy or private-network need, but it does not make an unauthorized content source lawful or guarantee anonymity, security, or better streaming performance.
Kodi’s internet settings documentation explains that general internet access is handled by the underlying operating system. That is why VPN setup normally happens outside Kodi.
How to use a VPN with Kodi
First identify the exact device and operating system running Kodi. Then check that your VPN provider supports that device and OS version. For example, NordVPN’s setup guide describes using its app or a supported manual VPN connection before launching Kodi, and lists Windows, Linux, Android, macOS, and iOS. This is a provider-specific workflow, not a guarantee that every TV box, Fire TV model, custom Kodi build, or OS version is supported. NordVPN also says its Kodi VPN add-ons do not currently work.

- Check the device: Find the operating system and version on the hardware where Kodi is installed.
- Confirm provider support: Consult the VPN provider’s current instructions for that exact device and OS. Verify app availability or whether a supported manual method, such as OpenVPN or IKEv2/IPsec, is offered.
- Set up the VPN outside Kodi: Install the provider app or configure the supported manual connection using the provider’s instructions.
- Connect, then launch Kodi: Establish the VPN connection before opening Kodi. If it does not connect, troubleshoot the VPN and device network settings rather than looking for a Kodi VPN add-on.
Kodi’s own internet troubleshooting guidance notes that connectivity problems can involve the operating system, firewall, modem/router, or antivirus settings. VPN behavior and available controls vary by provider and platform.
Choose a setup route for your device

Kodi runs on multiple operating systems and hardware platforms, including Windows and Linux PCs, Apple hardware, Android boxes, and Raspberry Pi. That broad Kodi compatibility does not mean a VPN app is available for every Kodi device. Confirm support for the precise hardware and software combination before choosing a route.

Why Kodi’s proxy settings are not VPN settings
Kodi’s internet settings include user-supplied HTTP, HTTPS, and SOCKS proxy options, including SOCKS5 with remote DNS resolving. A proxy is not the same as a system-level VPN. Kodi warns that proxy passwords are saved in unencrypted text files and can be easily discovered. Do not enter VPN account credentials in Kodi’s proxy-password field; use the provider’s supported VPN app or manual setup instead.

A VPN connection does not certify Kodi add-ons or the sources they access. Kodi’s add-ons can provide music or video content over the internet, and availability can differ by Kodi version. Treat the media player, add-ons, and content sources as separate things: a VPN does not establish that an add-on or source is legal, safe, reliable, or authorized.

- It does not guarantee privacy or security: Team Kodi warns that VPN providers may keep logs and that no VPN is entirely private or secure.
- It does not promise better streaming: The cited guidance does not establish that a VPN improves streaming performance or reliably unlocks services.
Use a VPN for a lawful device-level privacy purpose or to connect to a private network you are authorized to use. Check the provider’s privacy policy and terms rather than assuming that a VPN removes tracking or prevents malware.
