Pointing Claude Code at task-relevant files instead of asking it to search an entire repository may reduce the context it processes—and Anthropic says token costs increase with context size. An XDA Developers headline reports that the author’s Claude usage lasted “4x longer” after narrowing the context. That is a personal result, not a verified benchmark or a promise that your usage will stretch by the same amount.

What the “4x longer” claim means

The reported change was to direct Claude Code to relevant files rather than let it search the whole project. A September 18, 2026 AIpresso newsletter summarized that advice and the XDA Developers headline by Mahnoor Faisal. The available reporting does not establish the author’s plan, baseline, task mix, measurement period, or what “lasted” meant, so the multiplier cannot be independently evaluated as a controlled comparison.

Anthropic’s Claude Code cost documentation supports the underlying principle: “Token costs scale with context size: the more context Claude processes, the more tokens you use.” That explains why limiting irrelevant context can help, but it does not prove a fourfold saving. Repository exploration is still useful when Claude needs to discover how unfamiliar components fit together.

How to scope a Claude Code task

Start with the change and its boundaries

Describe the outcome you want, then name the files, directory, or component most likely to contain the work. Include relevant constraints, such as preserving an API or changing tests alongside implementation. If you are unsure which file owns the behavior, ask Claude to locate the likely entry points first rather than requesting a broad review of the entire repository.

Expand context only when the task calls for it

For a focused bug fix or small change, begin with the most relevant files. Add related tests, callers, configuration, or documentation when the task depends on them. For a cross-cutting change or an unfamiliar codebase, broader exploration may be necessary; the aim is not to forbid searching, but to avoid paying attention to material that does not help with the current task.

Keep reusable project guidance separate

Use a CLAUDE.md file for durable project instructions that matter across tasks, such as conventions or build and test commands. Anthropic’s memory documentation explains project memory and instructions. Keep task-specific details in the prompt; stable guidance need not be retyped each time.

Check whether narrower context changes your usage

Use /usage in Claude Code to inspect current usage. Anthropic notes that display details vary with authentication and plan, so treat it as a way to observe your own account—not as a universal token counter or a direct measure of savings from a particular prompt.

If you want to assess the effect of scoping, compare similar tasks over comparable time windows, using the same model and account plan. Claude usage also varies with codebase size and usage patterns, so a before-and-after comparison across unrelated work cannot isolate the effect of context size.

Clear stale context between unrelated tasks

When you move to a separate task, use /clear to start fresh. Anthropic’s cost guidance says stale context can waste tokens on subsequent messages. Clearing is most useful when the next task does not depend on the previous conversation; retain context when continuity is genuinely needed.

Practical trade-off: less context versus enough context

Narrowing context is a way to reduce unnecessary processing, not a rule to always provide the fewest possible files. Too little context can cause missed dependencies or incomplete changes. Start with the likely relevant scope, inspect or add related files when the task requires them, and use /usage to see how your own usage behaves. The “4x longer” result remains the author’s reported experience, not a general expectation.
