If you want wireless earbuds for calls but don’t want Apple or Bose, start with the Sony WF-1000XM6. SoundGuys and RTINGS both currently select it as their top call-focused pick. For lower-cost options, consider the OnePlus Buds 4 or CMF Buds Pro 2. These recommendations are supported by reviewer testing—not a broad owner consensus—and none is perfect in every environment.
Best non-Apple, non-Bose earbuds for calls at a glance
These picks address different budgets and use cases. Noise reduction in a microphone affects how you sound to the person on the other end; active noise cancellation (ANC) mainly reduces what you hear. They are related listening concerns, but not the same function.
| Pick | What testing indicates | Tradeoffs and fit |
|---|---|---|
| Sony WF-1000XM6 Overall |
SoundGuys and RTINGS name it their overall phone-call pick. RTINGS reports intelligible speech and useful separation from a moderately busy background. | Very loud sounds, such as passing trains, can trigger a noise gate and make speech harder to understand. It is not a guarantee of clear calls in every noisy place. |
| OnePlus Buds 4 Mid-range |
RTINGS reports clear, full voice reproduction and effective background-noise handling. | RTINGS measured just under five hours of battery with ANC on. It lacks three-way device pairing, and laptop multipoint behavior was inconsistent in testing. It is better suited to switching mainly between phones than among several computers. |
| CMF Buds Pro 2 Budget |
RTINGS reports effective voice isolation in noisy environments, ANC, more than six hours of continuous playback and multi-device pairing. | The bulkier shape may be less comfortable for some ears. |
| Anker Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro Upper-mid-range, multi-device option |
RTINGS reports intelligible speech, reduced steady background noise and three-way Bluetooth multi-device pairing. | Very loud sounds remain difficult, and voices may sound less than perfectly natural. |
The battery figures above are the reported test results for the stated conditions, not a promise for every listener or call pattern. ANC use, volume, fit and device behavior can affect real-world endurance.
Why the Sony WF-1000XM6 is the lead pick
Both current reviewer roundups cited here put the WF-1000XM6 at the top for calls. SoundGuys says it moved its overall pick from the WF-1000XM5 to the XM6 on February 12, 2026. RTINGS describes speech that remains intelligible against a moderately busy background, while noting that very loud transients can interfere with the voice. That makes it a strong starting point for mixed everyday settings, not an all-conditions solution.
#1 Best Overall
- JBL Deep Bass Sound: Get the most from your mixes with high-quality audio from secure, reliable earbuds with 8mm drivers featuring JBL Deep Bass Sound
- Comfortable fit: The ergonomic, stick-closed design of the JBL Vibe Beam fits so comfortably you may forget you're wearing them. The closed design excludes external sounds, enhancing the bass performance
- Up to 32 (8h + 24h) hours of battery life and speed charging: With 8 hours of battery life in the earbuds and 24 in the case, the JBL Vibe Beam provide all-day audio. When you need more power, you can speed charge an extra two hours in just 10 minutes.
- Hands-free calls with VoiceAware: When you're making hands-free stereo calls on the go, VoiceAware lets you balance how much of your own voice you hear while talking with others
- Water and dust resistant: From the beach to the bike trail, the IP54-certified earbuds and IPX2 charging case are water and dust resistant for all-day experiences
SoundGuys explains its microphone method this way: “Part of our testing process for every pair of wireless earbuds we review involves recording microphone samples in a variety of conditions, so you can listen for yourself how you’ll sound on the other line before you buy.” This is useful because a recording lets you judge the kind of voice quality that a score alone may conceal.
Choose by device switching, battery and fit
If you mainly switch between phones
The OnePlus Buds 4 is RTINGS’ mid-range recommendation. Its call clarity and background-noise handling are strengths, but its just-under-five-hour ANC-on test result and lack of three-way pairing matter if you make long calls or routinely jump between multiple devices. RTINGS also found laptop multipoint behavior inconsistent, so it is a less certain choice for a phone-plus-several-computers routine.

If price matters most
The CMF Buds Pro 2 is the budget pick among the wireless models here. RTINGS describes effective voice isolation in noisy settings and multi-device pairing, alongside more than six hours of continuous playback in its testing. Its larger shape is the main stated comfort caveat; a secure, comfortable fit matters during long calls as well as for sound.

RTINGS highlights three-way Bluetooth multi-device pairing on the Anker Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro. It reports intelligible speech and reduction of steady background noise, but very loud sounds remain a challenge and the captured voice may not sound entirely natural. Consider it when device switching is a priority, not as a way to eliminate every noisy-environment limitation.

A wired option for call-first use
If a cable is acceptable, Apple EarPods with USB-C are a useful low-cost comparison. SoundGuys and RTINGS both note the practical advantage of an inline microphone closer to the mouth than the mic in a wireless earbud. Check that your phone or computer has a compatible USB-C connection and supports audio through it before buying. This is a wired alternative, not a wireless recommendation.

The title’s “owners say” framing should be read cautiously: the available material does not establish a representative owner poll or collective winner. A roughly 2024 Reddit discussion began with an Android user asking, “I am an android user and refuse to get Air Pods! I need another suggestion. (Best mic)”. The poster later said they chose to try Pixel Buds Pro based on their phone and videos they had watched. That captures a real preference, not verified performance evidence.

Replies in the same thread were divided: one commenter recommended Huawei FreeBuds Pro 3, while another described personal satisfaction with Sony WF-1000XM5; other replies disagreed about Sony’s wind and noise performance. It is an old, single discussion rather than evidence of present-day consensus. SoundGuys also displays owner feedback, but one shown AirPods 4 owner review is a one-person sample and the page says proof of purchase was not verified.

How to judge earbuds for your own calls
- Listen for voice clarity in the conditions you actually use. Quiet rooms, steady traffic, wind and sudden loud sounds can produce different results.
- Check platform pairing. A model that works well with a phone may behave differently when connected to a computer or switched among several devices.
- Prioritize comfort and stability for long calls. An uncomfortable or loose fit can undermine an otherwise capable pair.
- Check battery with ANC enabled. A listening-time claim without the usage condition may not match a call-heavy day.
- Separate what you hear from what callers hear. ANC can make your surroundings quieter to you, while microphone processing determines how your voice and background sound reach the other person.
