Shielded twisted pair (STP) is cable made from twisted conductor pairs with a conductive screen around the pairs, the cable assembly, or both. The screen is intended to reduce electromagnetic interference. Because “STP” can refer to different constructions, the full shielding designation—not the abbreviation alone—is the clearest way to identify a cable.
How shielded twisted-pair cable is built
Twisting and shielding are separate features. Each pair consists of conductors twisted together; the twist helps manage interference between the conductors. A conductive layer—usually foil, braid, or a combination—may then screen individual pairs, the whole cable, or both.
The term depends on context. ISO/DIS 19642-13 defines STP within its road-vehicle cable scope as two single cores twisted to form a differential pair, with a common screen and outer jacket. That automotive definition is not a universal description of networking cable sold as STP. ISO/DIS 19642-13

For customer-premises cabling, ANSI/TIA-568.0-E addresses generic telecommunications cabling rather than automotive cable. A Fiber Optics Tech Consortium summary says the standard was published in March 2020 and its Addendum 1, covering balanced single twisted-pair cabling, in July 2022. Check the current applicable standard and project requirements when specifying a system. Fiber Optics Tech Consortium: TIA cabling standards
#1 Best Overall
- Low eccentricity: The wire has low eccentricity and uniform thickness, which can effectively prevent current breakdown and ensure electrical safety.
- twisted pair shielded cable has tinned copper mesh + aluminum foil, which makes it have high shielding performance, stronger anti-interference and more stable.
- Specification features high conductivity, low resistance , easy to welding, connect, cut and Separate.
- Flame retardant Cable: PVC flame retardant sheath, safe and flame retardant, automatically extinguished when leaving the open flame.
What the shielding designations mean
Common designations describe the overall screen first and the screening around individual pairs second. In this notation, U means unshielded, F means foil, and S means braid.
| Designation | Construction |
|---|---|
| U/UTP | No overall screen; pairs are unscreened. |
| F/UTP | Overall foil screen; pairs are unscreened. |
| U/FTP | No overall screen; individual pairs have foil screens. |
| F/FTP | Overall foil screen and foil screens around individual pairs. |
| S/FTP | Overall braid and foil screens around individual pairs. |
These designations are presented in Schneider Electric’s cabling FAQ, last modified July 3, 2026. Vendors may use informal terms such as “STP” or “FTP” differently, so verify the product’s actual construction rather than relying on a shorthand label. Schneider Electric: cabling shield designations

What the shield does—and what it does not guarantee
A cable screen is intended to attenuate electrical, magnetic, or electromagnetic interference. Depending on the installation, shielding can also help reduce emissions from the cable. It does not guarantee better performance in every setting: the cable, terminations, equipment, routing, and bonding must suit the application, and gaps or poor shield connections can undermine the benefit.
Shielded cable can also be harder to terminate correctly because the shielding needs continuity through compatible connections. Cisco’s instructional material discusses shielding, termination, and the risk that poor grounding or discontinuities can create noise problems. Cisco: twisted-pair cable and shielding

How to choose the right construction
Choose cable by its full specification and installation conditions, not simply by whether it is called STP. Check these points:
- Shield layout: Identify whether there is an overall foil or braid, screens around individual pairs, or both.
- Application and performance: Confirm the required cable category, protocol, and transmission performance. Automotive cable and customer-premises network cabling have different standards and scopes.
- Termination: Check that connectors and equipment support the intended shield continuity and that the installer can terminate it properly.
- Grounding and bonding: Follow the applicable cabling requirements and equipment instructions; grounding choices depend on the system and installation.
- Physical environment: Match the jacket and construction to routing, mechanical strain, and other site conditions. Siemens warns against tensile and compression strain on foil shields in its equipment guidance.
Grounding is installation-specific
A cable shield’s connection to ground is part of the system design, not a universal rule that can be inferred from “STP.” Siemens’ ET 200BL V21 industrial equipment guidance recommends grounding both ends to reduce low- and high-frequency interference, while warning that different ground potentials can drive equalizing current. It discusses an additional equipotential bonding conductor and, in certain settings where that bonding cannot be installed, capacitive grounding at one end for high-frequency interference reduction only. These are equipment-specific instructions, not general Ethernet wiring advice. Follow the requirements for the actual equipment, installation, and applicable standards.
