The MSI Raider 16 Max HX is a powerful desktop-replacement-style gaming laptop, not an easy-to-carry 16-inch machine. T3’s tested RTX 5090 configuration delivered strong Cyberpunk 2077 results, but its 2.6kg weight, high price, 1TB SSD and some chassis flex are meaningful trade-offs. The review covers one particular configuration; screen and component options vary by market and SKU.
What configuration did T3 review?
T3’s Max Freeman-Mills tested a Raider 16 Max HX with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX, 32GB of DDR5 memory (2×16GB), a 1TB SSD and a 16-inch WQXGA IPS display. The screen runs at 2560×1600 and 240Hz. T3 reports the tested laptop weighs 2.6kg and has a large footprint for a 16-inch model.
Those details matter when comparing listings: TechRadar tested a different RTX 5090 configuration, with a Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and 2TB SSD. MSI’s family specifications and marketing claims should not be mistaken for the exact components or test results of either review unit.

How fast is the Raider 16 Max HX in games?
T3’s Cyberpunk 2077 testing shows what its RTX 5090 review unit could do under specific settings. At native resolution with Ray-Tracing Low, it averaged 120.9fps. In Ray-Tracing Overdrive, T3 recorded a 60.87fps average; enabling 4x frame generation raised the reported average to 189.67fps.

- Advanced Thermal Architecture: Designed to support up to 300W of total system power, the robust thermal dynamic cooling system maintains optimal operating temperatures and peak performance during extended gaming sessions.
The frame-generation result is a separate mode, not equivalent to rendering 189.67 frames per second natively. When comparing benchmarks, match the game, resolution, ray-tracing preset, upscaling and frame-generation settings as closely as possible.
TechRadar’s separate RTX 5090 review unit averaged 60fps in Cyberpunk 2077’s Ray Tracing Overdrive preset at native 1600p using Balanced DLSS upscaling without frame generation. Its CPU and SSD differed from T3’s configuration, and its test conditions should not be treated as a direct rerun of T3’s test.

T3 also reported that its unit could reach 31fps unplugged in its Ray-Tracing Low test, but cautioned that battery life would not last long. That result suggests gaming away from the adapter is possible in a pinch, not that the laptop is suited to sustained unplugged play. TechRadar, testing its own configuration, recorded 8 hours 11 minutes in a movie battery test; that is a different workload and does not establish gaming battery life.
Which display and hardware options are available?
The panel in T3’s review unit was IPS, not OLED. T3 says an OLED upgrade is available from some retailers and in some territories at additional cost. MSI’s family page also lists a 16-inch QHD+ OLED option with a 240Hz refresh rate. Check the exact regional SKU and retailer listing rather than assuming the reviewed IPS panel or an OLED option comes standard.

MSI lists RTX 5090 Laptop GPU configurations with 24GB of GDDR7 memory and RTX 5080 configurations with 16GB. Its family specifications state support for up to 128GB of DDR5 memory and two M.2 SSD slots: one PCIe Gen5 x4 and one PCIe Gen4 x4. These are family-level specifications; confirm the specific model’s configuration and service guidance before planning an upgrade.
MSI says the combination of a Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and RTX 5090 can reach up to 300W combined CPU/GPU power in Apex Performance mode while connected to AC power. That maximum applies to the specified configuration and mode; it is not a measured power figure for T3’s Core Ultra 9 275HX test unit.

How portable is it?
At 2.6kg according to T3, the reviewed laptop is heavy for a 16-inch machine, and T3 describes its footprint as large. TechRadar likewise characterizes its review unit as bulky and a poor fit for someone seeking a laptop that is easy to take on the go. The practical trade-off extends beyond the laptop itself: a high-power gaming system also means carrying its power adapter if you expect full performance away from a desk.
It makes more sense as a machine that can move between rooms or travel occasionally than as a lightweight everyday carry. If portability is a priority, consider the total load and dimensions of the exact configuration, not just the screen size.

What are the build, keyboard and cooling like?
T3 describes the chassis as plastic-heavy and notes some flex, but says it did not encounter deeper solidity problems in regular use. TechRadar is more critical of flex around the keyboard housing and of the touchpad. These are reviewers’ hands-on impressions, not evidence that every unit has a defect; anyone considering it should assess the keyboard deck and pointer controls in person where possible.
The reviews also differ in their observations of cooling noise. T3 says the fans were not as loud as feared and quotes Freeman-Mills: “The laptop never got uncomfortably hot in my testing.” TechRadar reports noticeable fan noise under intensive workloads. Neither account establishes a universal noise or temperature level across all configurations, rooms and workloads.
How much does it cost, and is it worth buying?
T3 reported a starting price of £2,249 / $2,999 and reviewed an RTX 5090 configuration with the Core Ultra 9 275HX. TechRadar listed its different RTX 5090 / Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus configuration at $4,299 / £3,999 at the time of publication. These are dated review prices, not verified current retailer prices. Region, retailer and configuration can materially change the amount you pay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Raider 16 Max HX is worth considering if high-end gaming performance matters more to you than portability and you find a configuration whose display, storage and price suit your needs. It is a less convincing choice if you want a compact travel laptop, expect a premium-feeling chassis throughout, or regard 1TB as insufficient at the price. Before buying, compare the complete SKU—not just the Raider name—including processor, graphics, RAM, SSD, panel type, refresh rate and local price.
MSI’s statement that the family is its “most powerful” is a company marketing claim based on internal testing, not an independently established ranking across the market.
